Call me a stickler for detail, but the past tense was NOT incorrect at the time, since a problem had obviously occurred (past tense). It soon became apparent that the consequences of that "problem" were continuing, but that doesn't alter the fact that he said "We've had a problem." I suspect Jim Lovell has got tired of people complaining to him that they paid good money for his quotation and he 'didn't write it as it appeared in the film.' Another good Hollywood quotation: "When the legend becomes fact, print the legend." |

I make sure that I correct the movie quote in all my lectures. I state that it belongs in a fictitious book titled "I didn't say that!" Also, I just learned that one of the NASA centers has contracted for a leadership course that will use a couple of parts of the Apollo 13 movie. ![](http://www.collectspace.com/ubb/smile.gif) |

Lovell must not have much of a problem with it as I don't recall ever seeing him sign it with the proper quote - but he does sign the incorrect one. They even printed the incorrect one on the back of the audiotape box for his book, which I assume he would have at least some control over. I would think that as long as everyone gets the basic meaning and context of it, it really doesn't matter all that much if its in past or present tense. |

At his last Novaspace signing 4/04, he'd do it either way for +$50. |

That sounds like a deal now but if I remember right I think he was only charging $125 an autograph back then. I would imagine it'll probably be more than $50 now but hopefully I'm wrong. |

Although not listed as an official guest, my co-author on "Animals in Space," Chris Dubbs, has told me he will nevertheless be attending Spacefest III as a visitor. The publishers of this book, Springer-Praxis, have just signed up for a booth at the show, so copies of the book will be available should you wish to have Chris and I sign them.Chris' new book, "Realizing Space," (Outward Odyssey series) will be released before the show, so if you can get a copy beforehand he will happily sign these as well. His co-author, Emeline Patt-Dahlstrom, may also be in attendance, but only on the Saturday and Sunday. Arrangements are still being negotiated to hopefully have supplies of all the author-attending Outward Odyssey books available at the show. |

Looks like we'll lose Jim McDivitt for Spacefest III. His stepson has moved up his wedding date, and has totally messed up Jim's summer schedule. Everyone else looks pretty solid, though. |

That would be the ultimate gotcha: reprint all the invitations with the bottom line reading "A buffet-style barbecue reception to follow at the Starr Pass Resort, Tucson, Ariz. After-dinner Star Party to follow. (Note: Those signing the guest book will be charged a $150 completion and 3-D item fee.)" |

If any UK cS'ers are going to Spacefest and could help me get two further signatures added on a multi-signed item would be greatly appreciated. It is a panorama and would be in a rigid tube 80mm dia. x 300mm long. All fees obviously covered and a contribution towards the weekends costs given. |

All our 35+ talks have been moved into the same area, next to the main convention floor, rather than being upstairs/downstairs. The rooms also hold more people than before.

Thanks for the kind words Bri - but this is a collective effort - so thanks to all! By the way not only did he fly the first flight of the YT-38, but also the N-156F (that became the F-5) and the A-9 that was competition for the A-10 (the A-10 won). Lew is in his 90's as is Gen. Cardenas, so I wouldn't wait on these guys. I am trying to put together some covers of the first flights of the N-156F and YT-38 for sale at the show. If I can get them done in time I will bring some dual cancelled anniversary ones of Lew's N-156F first flight and also cancelled on the flight of the first USAF flight anniversary. Already signed by Bud Evans, the USAF chief test pilot. RARELY do you see items from first flights signed by both the company chief test pilot and military first flight pilot. These will be in extremely limited quantity. |

There's still time to sit with an astronaut at Friday's Luncheon. Tables still available: Ed Gibson, Walt Cunningham, Jack Lousma, Bruce McCandless, Bob Cardenas, General Tom Stafford, Charles Walker, Al Worden, Sy Liebergot, Paul Weitz and Rusty Schweickart. We still have a few spots available at the banquet, too, but not for long. |

The list of speakers for SpaceFest III is incredible. At any one time there will usually be three speakers on Friday and Saturday. This creates some dilemmas for those of us planning our schedules. Here are a couple of examples from the preliminary schedule posted on-line: At 10:30 a.m. on Friday there is a choice between 1) astronomer David Levy, co-founder of the comet that hit Jupiter in 1994 and noted lecturer; 2) Dan Durda, planetary scientist, future sub-orbital astronaut and outstanding speaker; and 3) authors and editors Francis French and Colin Burgess, who know as much about space as anyone and who know how to communicate their knowlege. Each of these gentlemen are keynote speakers themselves-- what to do? Another example is at 4:30 p.m. on Friday. There is a choice between 1) Rick Searfoss, former NASA astronaut and XCOR test pilot; 2) Mark Sykes, director of the Planetary Institute and co-investigator of the DAWN spacecraft to Vesta and Ceres; and 3) Robert Pearlman, the guru of space collecting and a very talented speaker. While this is partially an autograph show (and I will get a few), the speaker program is not to be missed. I am especially looking forward to Carolyn Porco's presentation about Cassini-- an excellent speaker with unbelievable graphics of the Saturn system. |
