Astronaut Scholarship Foundation release Astronaut Robert Crippen Private SigningBe one of the fortunate few to add the autograph of NASA's first Space Shuttle Pilot to your collection! The Astronaut Scholarship Foundation (ASF), a non-profit organization, is rolling out the red carpet for the private signing of four-time spaceflight veteran, shuttle astronaut, Robert L. Crippen. The signing will be held in late October with 100% of the proceeds benefiting the ASF. Space enthusiasts have until October 19, 2009 to send in artifacts, baseballs, covers, flown items, models, and photos -- nearly anything you desire -- to be autographed by this space hero. All items must be accompanied by the ASF Order Form and Item Description Form posted here. Crippen, a U.S. Hall of Fame astronaut, piloted the first space shuttle mission in 1981, where he and crewmate John Young evaluated launch and landing operations of the first true reusable manned spaceship. Two years later, Crippen commanded the first successful space repair mission for a disabled sun-study satellite during STS-7. After his final two missions in 1984, Crippen achieved a total of 565 hours of spaceflight. Items will be accepted from now to October 19, 2009. Don't delay! Launch your unique space items for rendezvous with Crippen's autograph today! |

This sounds good, am I right in thinking he doesn't attend many signing shows? |

This is great and a decent price too, except that if you need the item signed by Bob Crippen you might not get it back in time for the ASF Show in November. Robert do you know if the ASF crew is going to make sure we can get our items back in time, maybe have a table that we can pick up our items at the show? |

The order form states that items will be shipped back to the owners BY Oct. 30, via USPS Priority Mail. So depending on what day you are going to ASF, you should probably get your stuff back. There is also an option to have your items sent by FedEx. |

The ASF will hold items sent in for Crippen's autograph for fans who are also attending the Astronaut Autograph and Memorabilia Show at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor's Complex, November 6-8. |

The Crippen deadline looms: Monday, Oct 19. Sent my items in today.Let me remind everyone that we have sweetened the pot with a no-completion fee policy at our own John Young signing in January. Get your STS-1 items completed then, but you must start with a Bob Crippen autograph from ASF. |

Also, ASF has some nice photos for sale to be autographed, so if you are in a bind for time that is a great option. I think I will be getting the lovely STS-1 launch photo. Thanks for the reminder, Kim! |

What a fantastic opportunity to have some completed STS-1 items. Thanks to ASF and Kim. The absence of completion fees is going to make the JY signing very attractive. Follow that up with some beautiful Novaspace framing work and January is going to be a month to look forward to. |

The signing took place today... unfortunately, my item was not signed. But the ASF did an EXCELLENT job at contacting me and making sure I was satisfied. Huge props to them. |

Why wasn't your item signed? Was it something unusual that he refused or did they just mess up? |

It was an usual item: an STS-1 Flown Flag Presentation. I asked for him to sign the flag itself and he declined. I had a feeling he would since there are a number of astronauts that don't do that but I decided to take a chance since others do. They asked if it was ok for him to sign the actual certificate and I declined. I kind of regret it and I kind of don't...but like I said, the ASF was top notch with it all. |

FYI: John Young won't sign on a flag either. |

MrSpace86, it sounds like Crippen did you a favor if you were hoping to get Young's autograph on it at the upcoming signing. I don't think that the Crippen sig on the mount would have enhanced the value much. Would have been a nice memento though. |

Thanks Kim for the info. That was going to be a question I was going to ask. DSeuss: I thought about having the full crew signing the certificate, signing the flag, anything. But the certificate itself has preprinted signatures, so it would look weird to have the crew sign the certificate so that's why I aimed for the flag itself. I am still glad he did do a signing though. And like I said, the ASF did a wonderful job. Better than Novaspace... just kidding! |

For what it's worth, I probably would've done the same thing. I've never liked getting someone to sign an item that already has their facsimile/fake signature on it. It's just never looked good to me that way. |

My items arrived back today over The Pond. They are superb and a huge debt of thanks to Nicole and the ASF for the opportunity. They do what they say and send them back in your own original packaging, so I am sure glad that I did a good job when sending the stuff out. Take note anyone new to the scheme next time around. - and talking of that, how about Eileen Collins for the next one? |
