The e-mail I received came from the Astronaut Scholarship fund e-mail address and was listed as coming from Linn LeBlanc, the executive director. On the e-mail was a fairly comprehensive set of directions and instructions along with my receipt and instructions to pick up the tickets from the will call office at the KSC Vistor Complex. |

While reading our small local newspaper the Morning Sentinel published in Waterville, Maine, I ran across this headline on page C7 of Sunday's edition: "Charity auction is out of this world". The ~200 word article focused on the ASF auction, but also mentioned the Nov 7-9 event at KSC. Nice to see this event getting some advertisement in our small community, I just hope all these Mainers don't run up the auction prices on the items I plan to bid on! |

Steve's dorky tip for people planning on getting several items signed at the event: When you click on any of the "Base Fee" links, you are sent to a simple table showing all of the names and fees. If you copy and paste that table into Word, you could then add the column "What to Get Signed" (and maybe "Missions Flown.") With all the models I'm bringing and a couple of things I'm getting signed for other people, I've found such an organizer very helpful. I note that in that table, there is no mention of any additional fees for signing models. There's base fee, inscription, crew completion, and then a column of "Other" with "None" for all of the astronauts. Is anyone else planning on bringing models/globes/other 3D items? Have you asked if "None" means no additional fee? Anyone know why Dave Scott's signing fee is $162? Is that a nice round number in rupees? Dinars? Yen? Kroner? Marks? Krooni? Euros? Guilders? Shekels? Lire? Riyals? Rubles? Palladium ounces? Oh, and in regards to the ASF auction- see the Apollo 13 meal packet, used just before the explosion? Sorry to do this, but: DIBS! |

This was a mis-print. It should have read, "Your ticket details are in your e-mail post". I have a black manx cat who likes to sit on my keyboard, plus has its head on my computer screen, this makes my wording, so to speak, go up the shoot. I apologise for my mistakes. The will call is usually booths 1-4 at KSCVC, as I have picked up so much from them in the past. I am a regular visitor there. Hope to see you all.Brenda. PS. My darn cat is back, must like surfing the net? |

Steve:Regarding your question about unanticipated fees for 3D items, you might be wary of Buzz Aldrin. I took three models last time and paid royally... $300 base fee for each. Even though Buzz's handlers were our cS buddies who treated me just great, Buzz's 3D fee was major sticker shock for me and left a bad taste in my mouth... not to mention the sharp pain I felt elsewhere. I won't do that again. Learned my lesson. Rob |

Its been announced (on the ASF show website) that Buzz Aldrin's base fee will be $350 for the show plus $20 per word inscriptions and $600 crew completion. Needless to say I won't be getting anything signed by him. Talk about trying to price yourself out of the market... I can see there being not too long a queue at his table for autographs... |

collectSPACE will be exhibiting separately this year and will not be involved with any of the astronauts' signings. For those of you who cannot make the show, part of our plan for our booth is to blog live from the show floor, posting photos and reports as they happen. |

Well, there's the crazy $350 Aldrin fee I've been afraid of ever since I read that a dealer has convinced him that he should charge that much. (As of right now the main "Astronauts/Guests" page still shows "TBA", but if you click on that and go to the table I mentioned above, you'll see the $300 and $600. Oh, and he's the only one who has "Will Apply" under "Other", so it looks like he's the only one charging more for models.)Even at $225 I would have brought an Apollo 11 photo signed by Collins and maybe a photo signed by moonwalkers from other missions, but now I will not be bringing anything. One of our European members last week mailed me two things to have signed by Aldrin. He had told me he was worried about being priced out- looks like that's happened. Steve |

Frankly there is only so much I will pay for anything. Buzz Aldrin was in Toronto in August and I saw him for $250 Canadian dollars. At the time Canadian dollar was on par with U.S Dollar. That price included an autograph which he would add short inscription if asked at no charge. Also included was a photo Op and later an hour seminar with a Q and A after. To me that seemed reasonable. No offense meant but $350 listed on the ASF web table is far above what I would pay. Off topic can anyone tell me what sort of payment can be made for autographs at the booths? Will they accept cash, credit card, travelers cheques, dracmas, chickens, my first born, etc. and if they accept credit cards what kind? |

Last year you had to pre-purchase payment tickets with cash or a major credit card before getting anything signed. This helped only because some astronauts are not set up to accept credit cards. If they go this route again this year I hope they'll only require pre-paid tickets for the astronauts who don't take cards. Wasn't much fun keeping up with all those little different colored tickets. Reminded me of going to the fair when I was a kid... "Step right up! It only takes four $25 tickets, two $20 tickets and one $10 ticket to get this astronaut's autograph!" P.S. Just saw Bolden and McBride are there Sunday only. |

Just a thought for those who can not go to the show, if you join the ASF Autograph club for 2008 you can get most of the autos of alot of those attending the show at a cheaper price! So if funds are tight consider it you get some great signed photos and some hand signed letters to boot! I just thought I would pass this along as I noticed alot of those signing I just got this year!! Wish I could go but just cant do it this year! |

I am also disappointed to see Buzz charge so much (even though I knew it was likely coming)...which amounts to a doubling of his base fee from $175 to $350 in one year. With the economy in the dumps and many collectors likely feeling the crunch, I have to believe Buzz won't win over any new fans with that increased fee. I know I will definitely be by-passing his table and taking my money to the other astronauts instead. |

Unfortunately I have a couple of completions, but that will conclude my signing "experiences" with Bu$$. The money is one thing, but I don't even recall getting a "thank you" let alone a smile, when I've handed over ridiculous amounts in the past. Bill Anders and others have railed at collectors (often rightly) in the past for commercially exploiting their autographs. I hope he pays heed to the fact that some of his fellow astronauts have turned this commercialization into a fine art, where the "encounter" to them is worth nothing more than the cash. Paul |

Will Buzz's signature add $600 value to the items you need to complete Paul? If not, perhaps you could consider giving his table a body-swerve?Regards, Derek |

I just ordered a hardback, signed copy of Jerry Carr/Dave Shayler's book direct from Apogee in the US and noted that they have a stock of 16x20s signed by Aldrin for sale at $275 + postage, so if you're looking to save $50+....Paul |

Wow.... Glad I got most of my Aldrin stuff signed before he decided to go wild with the fees. Maybe he's been talking to John Young. Of course, some of them were signed for free so it averages out, I guess. |

Re: Buzz's fee I understand he has the right to charge whatever he wants to charge, but $350????!!! Let's be serious. True, nobody's forcing us to pay that amount, but I'm very curious to see the results from this year's show. I'll be shocked if Aldrin generates even half the business he's had over the last several years. I remember finding it strange (borderline ridiculous) at the 2004 show in Burbank when Aldrin and Dave Scott each charged $150 as their base fee. I thought it was crazy for Scott to charge as much as Aldrin (even though I paid for both). Now I find myself defending Scott for not raising his price much over the last four years and thanking my stars I got Aldrin when I did. I can't imagine dropping more than $700 for two Aldrin signatures with "Apollo 11" inscriptions. Give me a break. We say it every time something like this happens, but it really is a shame that the true collectors are the ones who get the shaft. Aldrin can't be hurting for cash and it's sad when greed overwhelms one's desire to meet and greet the people who respect them the most. Jamie P.S. To get just the 6 moonwalkers at this show will cost you $857... that's up from the $495 I paid in 2004 (I actually got Mitchell last year for $40). |

I'd also note that, contrary to the common trend, Alan Bean's signing fee at the KSC show ($60) has actually decreased from the fee he charged at Spacefest 2007 ($65) and the fee he currently charges for through-the-mail signings ($75). |

Ken Havekotte's SpaceCoast Cover Service, located in the heart of Florida's Space Coast, will be one of the autograph memorabilia show exhibitors on the main astronaut floor at the KSCVC on Nov. 7-9, 2008. One of our services available will be a free space memorabilia appraisal and authentication service for most space collecting categories. In addition, we'll have complimentary space gifts to everyone we meet at the show along with a public display featuring more than 150 artifacts and memorabilia pieces from our nation's "Golden Age" of space exploration. Come by and see us. For those that already know us, it would be a pleasure to see you again. For any first-timers, we're always happy and excited to meet new space collector friends and aerospace enthusiasts. It should be a great "space" weekend for all! |

You're not the only one with that plan! Check out the GRIN site for shuttle photos...many of which are presented in high resolution suitable for printing at 8x10 or even larger. Also, this NASA page has links to photos for many missions from the second half of the shuttle program...many of which are also in high resolution (thought check the stats to be sure). You could find a suitable launch photo from one of these missions for printing. Since you're probably not looking for any one specific mission, you could browse until you find something suitable...most likely a launch or landing photo. (Keep in mind that photo resolution varies widely and that you probably want something at least 1MB or greater for an 8x10 and 2+MB for a 16x20. The higher the resolution, the better.) For my own use, I had three photos turned into 16x20s at Shutterfly and will be picking the best of the three for collecting signatures. I also suggest getting a couple of different images printed, so you have some choice when it comes time to gather signatures. |

Yes you do need to beware of Buzz on the 3D stuff. At the Burbank show I had a helmet I wanted to be signed, and he made up a (extremely high) fee on the spot after giving me a little lecture about how much his signature would improve the overall value of it. I've got one more helmet to be signed, so we shall see how that goes.In all fairness however, my encounters with Buzz at each show after Burbank were much more enjoyable and I sat next to him at the San Antonio dinner, where he was a lot of fun. |

If all else fails in obtaining that perfect photo to take to the show keep in mind that the Space Shop at KSC usually has a good selection of posters you might consider. Some are posted here. If you go this route remember to bring a proper tube to take it back home with you safely. You could check with the shop at the Astronaut Hall of Fame Museum about their photo/poster selection too. I don't know if this is your first autograph show or not, but I see this show will be the first for a few cSers. For those of you planning on using silver or gold ink please remember that you need to pace yourself and let the ink dry before returning anything signed in silver or gold to a plastic sleeve, folder or poster tube. I've heard one needs to wait at least an hour, especially if signed on a glossy, and even longer if signed with a paint pen. Better safe than sorry! |

For those who enjoy collecting signed books, two updates, both Outward Odyssey related: - Francis French, co-author of Into That Silent Sea and In The Shadow of the Moon, will be at the show assisting Dee O'Hara. I have it on good authority that if you were to bring your copies of his books to the show, he would be more than happy to sign them for you.
- Joe Kerwin will have a limited supply of Homesteading Space, his new book with David Hitt and Owen Garriott, available for sale at the show for $25 each. If you'd like for him to sign and inscribe it, the total cost will be $60.

I got this signed by Lovell for a friend at Autographica. Fine silver sharpie worked ok but you might want to consider "fixing" the signature to prevent smudging. A word of caution, Lovell's handler considered the half-inch thick base a 3D item and the consequent stress of signing such a difficult thing merited a £135 ($220) signing fee! That has put me off acquiring one of these models. Paul |
