Microsoft co-founder's space art, artifacts to be sold by Christie's

Visions of humanity's future in space and historic spaceflight artifacts are heading for auction from the estate of Paul G. Allen.

Christie's on Thursday (April 15) released the catalogs for three upcoming sales devoted to Allen's sprawling collection of "groundbreaking scientific and artistic achievements throughout history." The "Gen One: Innovations" auctions include a live "Pushing Boundaries: Ingenuity" sale in New York on Sep. 10 and two online auctions themed to the history of computing and the art of the future that are open for bidding through the same date.

The Over The Horizon: Art of the Future auction brought in a total of $2,927,358.
Chesley Bonestell's "Saturn as Seen from Titan" led Over the Horizon: Art of the Future, achieving $302,400, a world auction record for the artist. Ten further works by Chesley Bonestell — all of which illustrated Collier's "Man Will Conquer Space Soon" series — sold for a total of $1,184,400.

Other standout lots include Robert T. McCall's "Pioneering the Space Frontier No. 8," which realized $277,200, and "Clean Air Park" by Fred Freeman, which sold for $27,720, more than 34 times its low estimate.

The "Art of the Future" section had some excellent prices for Chesley Bonestell original art. All above $140 per square inch and many well above that not counting the addition of Buying Power.

Lot 211 "Saturn as Seen From Titan" sold for a whopping $533 per square inch or $240k. R. McCall's "Pioneering the Space Frontier" also received a great price.

I believe the following assumptions are worthy of discussion. Is this new very elevated pricing related to the cachet of Paul Allen? Christie's being a British auction house? The market finally being realistic about the fact that this man's art "laid the foundation for the development of the American space program"?
