I am the reluctant consignor of this piece, a Neil Armstrong full signature, Lot 7279. I've loved holding it for a number of years, but have decided to let it go for someone else to enjoy. Outside of the cool sentiment behind its existence, and the humor flowing through it, it is one of the few full-signature "Armstrong" autographs (for a collector item) that I have seen. Occasionally you find a full signature on a formal document, etc. But most autographs — certainly from the era this one was penned — are usually his standard shortened form. I do hope a cS'er or someone from our community can add this to their collection and enjoy it as much as I have. A really special Armstrong signature in my mind that makes it stand out from the crowd. |

I've never consigned as many items to one auction as I did for this one. There are 30 items of mine in there; most being "standard" space auction lots like signed photos. If you don't mind, I'd like to call attention to just two more "special" items.First, there is an Astronaut Hall of Fame poster (with 20 great photos from Mercury to the shuttle) signed by 17 M-G-A astronauts. Among them are "the first American in space, six of the original seven Mercury astronauts, and at least one member of every Apollo mission—including every commander but Armstrong." Then there is a wonderful, vintage, large work of space art by Russell Arasmith. It shows the Apollo 9 Command/Service Module Gumdrop docked with the Lunar Module Spider high above the Earth, with LMP Rusty Schweickart spacewalking around the exterior of the Spider and CMP Dave Scott preparing to perform a standup EVA from Gumdrop’s hatch. Arasmith did all the space drawings for the Los Angeles Times. The drawings were the result of extensive briefings he attended at various NASA centers. All were done before the fact on the same schedule with the individual missions involved. The articles and the drawing were run in the Los Angeles Times on the day the actual event occurred. The Times Syndicate then distributed the artwork to 300 newspapers all over the world. There is a NASA web page showing samples of Arasmith's art from Gemini through the shuttle. And here is a space art blog page all about Arasmith's artwork specifically for Apollo 9, including this painting. And finally, as an example of his work being published, is the extra edition of the LA Times on the evening of the Apollo 1 fire, with his picture of the CM with a cutaway view used on the front page. This lot is a great opportunity for a wonderful addition to a space art collection. |

That Arasmith illustration certainly caught my eye as I was going through the auction catalog. I don’t think I had ever heard of him before, although I’ve likely seen examples of his prolific artwork. Thanks for providing the great background information and links for further reading. |

Thank you; my pleasure. Actually your mention of "background information" reminded me that about three years ago I found online other examples of his work printed in newspapers that I can't find now - maybe the copyright tightened up on scans of newspapers. Fortunately, I had copied and pasted several into a Google Doc. If you are interested in the Arasmith Apollo 9 painting, you might like to see his printed-around-the-country art from Apollo 7, another from Apollo 9, and Apollo 11. |

Very cool. I love learning about "new" (old) space artists. It occurred to me where I might have seen some of Arasmith's work. There are almost a dozen of his works published in Piers Bizony's book, "The Art of NASA." The images are striking. I guess the artist's name didn't register when I read through the book this summer. |

I have consigned some rare patches to the upcoming RR Space Auction: Gemini 12 patch, Karol Bobko's MOL with Bobko name patch, SMEAT patch, Apollo 8 souvenir patch, Apollo 13 crew patch, Apollo 14 silver bordered back up crew patch, flown STS-3 and STS-6 suit patches from Jack Lousma and Don Peterson, an STS-128 COLBERT patches (two different versions), and an STS-70 flown KFC fire department patch 1 of 40.Some of these are much rarer than others but the MOL and SMEAT patches are especially so. Check them out. |

I, too, have consigned a few pieces, namely my Command Module hatch model coated in Apollo 13 CM flown kapton.I'll be sad it isn't gracing my display anymore, but I hope it goes to a good home! |

For whatever it's worth, I've sort of taken it upon myself to identify, and in some small way, honor many an artist from the 'golden age' of space exploration. I actually contributed to Mr. Bizony's book. If interested, they can be seen here. |

As Larry McGlynn has been very public with his consignment of Wally Schirra's Omega Speedmaster, congratulations to both he and RR for an amazing outcome during this evening's auction and the record sale of an astronaut-owned timepiece; exceeding even the hammer price of Dave Scott's lunar surface worn Bulova (also auctioned by RR in Fall 2015). |

Congratulations! The fact that Wally Schirra was the first astronaut who introduced and wore a Speedmaster in space may have played a role here. Off to the Omega Museum in Biel? |

Incredible! Very happy for you Larry and congrats. I second Ken’s comments and can’t think of a better person to be rewarded for their pursuits in, and contributions to, the space-collecting field. |
