Cockroaches and the Apollo 11 moon dust they were fed up for auction

For sale: One small sample of the moon brought back to Earth in 1969 by the Apollo 11 astronauts, the first humans to walk on the lunar surface.

Condition: Well-traveled and once digested. The dust was carefully extracted from the stomachs of cockroaches. Three of the insects are included with the lot.

And to think they worried about bugs from the moon.

Also, of interest, the flown Apollo 17 grip.

There is a new TV Show airing on the Fox Nation streaming service called "Selling History." Scott S. and I have small parts in this six episode show which will air on June 6th.

So true about the microscope. I have needed to look at a microfilm Bible and lunar dust from Apollo 11.

Great job Bobby, Scott and Larry. I fully enjoyed the show and looking at all the cool stuff in the the background.

You all looked very comfortable in front of the camera. I know how hard that is. I am looking forward to watching all the episodes and getting some more history lessons.

A must watched series!

NASA halts sale, wants back Apollo 11 moon dust fed to cockroaches

As it turns out, attempting to sell moon dust that was extracted from the stomaches of cockroaches does indeed bug NASA.

So much so, that the space agency requested RR Auction of New Hampshire halt its sale of the once-digested lunar sample. The lot in question, "Apollo 11 Lunar Soil Experiment (Cockroaches, Slides, and Post-Destructive Testing Specimen)" had been set to fall under the hammer on Thursday evening (June 23), as part of the live bidding segment of RR's "Remarkable Rarities" auction.

NASA: Give us back our moon dust and cockroaches (AP/Washington Post) —
"All Apollo samples, as stipulated in this collection of items, belong to NASA and no person, university, or other entity has ever been given permission to keep them after analysis, destruction, or other use for any purpose, especially for sale or individual display," said NASA's letter dated June 15.

I see this auction has now ended, but I hope someone else spotted that this translational hand-controller from the Apollo 17 command module was NOT used by Commander Gene Cernan "...to safely guide the CM 'America' back into Earth's atmosphere..." That was the job of Ron Evans, the Command Module Pilot.

Concur; Evans and Cernan swapped seats. Cernan however did occupy the commander's couch and interacted with the T-controller during phases of flight, including launch for potential manual initiation of abort (not captured in the description).

The auction description was either written by someone who doesn't know that on Apollo missions 10 to 17, the pilot of the spacecraft was the Command Module Pilot (a clue in the name) and he carried out the dockings, re-entry, etc...

Or it was written very carefully to imply that the better-known Gene Cernan steered Apollo 17 through re-entry. As written, the description is technically correct. It just misleads. If that was deliberate, it was entirely unnecessary. An Apollo lunar mission hand-controller? For heaven's sake, it doesn't really matter who used it. It's an amazing and historic artifact and I would give my eye-teeth to own it (but not the amount of money it will have attracted...my wife would divorce me!)

All times are CT (US)
