Reuters: India's space agency approves manned space mission India's state-run space agency approved its first indigenous manned mission into space on Tuesday, aiming to put an astronaut outside the earth's atmosphere by 2014. The approval came after top Indian scientists met in the southern technology hub of Bangalore to discuss the viability of the mission. "They were unanimous in suggesting that the time is appropriate for India to undertake a manned mission," a statement from the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) said. |

India is considering sending one of its citizens into space on board a Russian spacecraft to acquire the skills necessary for future manned space missions, RIA Novosti reports. "India would like to have one of its astronauts trained in Russia and send him into space on board the Soyuz spacecraft," said a senior researcher from the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO).He said ISRO had been in talks on the issue with the Russian Federal Space Agency and "received a positive response." |

Space News via Space.com reports that the designs for India's first manned spaceship have been revealed. In its maiden manned mission, ISRO's largely autonomous 3-ton capsule will orbit the Earth at 248 miles (400 km) in altitude for up to seven days with a two-person crew on board, ISRO chairman G. Madhavan Nair announced Jan. 3 at the Indian Science Congress held in Shillong. The capsule will be designed to carry three people, and a planned upgraded version will be equipped with a rendezvous and docking capability, he said....[ISRO spokesman] Satish said the astronaut capsule would launch atop a modified version of ISRO's Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV) Mark 2, currently under development. The GSLV Mark 2 features an indigenously developed cryogenic upper-stage engine; the Mark 1 variant currently in use has a Russian-supplied upper stage engine. The first test launch of the standard GSLV Mark 2 launcher is scheduled for this year. Satish said ISRO's human spaceflight program will benefit from assistance provided by the Russian Federal Space Agency, Roskosmos. The cooperative arrangement was sealed in an accord signed Dec. 5 by Nair and Roskosmos Director-General Anatoly Perminov during a state visit to India by Russian President Dimitri Medvedev. Under the accord, an Indian cosmonaut will fly aboard a Russian Soyuz spacecraft in 2013 ahead of ISRO's planned 2015 mission, Satish said. |

I wonder when they will begin their astronaut selection process? It must be fairly soon if they are to: - Select an initial group of astronaut candidates
- Provide initial training
- Select two (?) candidates for the Soyuz flight to train in Russia from 2012
- Soyuz flight in 2013
Looking at this rough schedule, they must surely have their pool of candidates beginning training by, say, early 2010? |

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has handed over the first "Crew Module Structural Assembly" for the "Human Spaceflight Program" to Vikram Sarabhai Space Center (VSSC), Thiruvananthapuram of ISRO in Bangalore, recently. Interesting, so is this a boilerplate or actual flight hardware that will be launched unmanned (sorry Lady Gaganaut!) in the near future? |

As noted in the release: The first Crew Module will be further equipped with systems necessary for crew support, navigation, guidance and control systems by ISRO for experimentation in the forthcoming GSLV-MK3 launch. The GSLV-III rocket or Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle Mark III is slated to launch later this year (as early as May or June). NDTV reports it will be a suborbital flight, with no passengers. In its first test flight no crew or any animals are likely to be flown."Only re-entry technologies and flight dynamics will be tested and the capsule will be recovered 400-500 kilometers away from Port Blair in the Bay of Bengal," Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) chairman K Radhakrishnan told NDTV. |

Okay, so it's really going to happen. I thought it was all just wishful thinking on the part of the Indians... |

So the Gaganyaan is smaller than Apollo but bigger than Soyuz. |

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is delaying its human spaceflight program in response to safety concerns, Chairman S. Somanath said at a press conference on Thursday (June 30). The ISRO chief emphasised that various demonstrations would be taken up and an unmanned mission in the middle of next year and make sure everything is fine. "(Gaganyaan) cannot happen this year or next year. This is for the safety of our folks." "We need to remove the worry part – any time it can burst. Worry can be removed only by ruggadising the object, testing it more number of times and introducing intelligence in the rocket so that it can identify problems, let the aircraft know pilots can escape. But rockets cannot do that. Rockets are moving very fast and rockets themselves have to find out something is going bad now so let these fellows go away. It will automatically command an escape system and the astronauts can escape. This is new system currently what we are doing is let us wait for some more time." "If we want to fly astronauts, we need to first prove the safety system.. it has to go through many tests. We are trying to do that this year. I don't want to end up doing the Gaganyaan programme with a disaster. We will want to do it very cautiously." |

India plans to launch astronauts for the first time no sooner than 2026, roughly a year past the previously known timeline, following a series of uncrewed flight tests slated to begin in December, said S. Somanath, the chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). "There are complex systems in the Gaganyaan program," he said. "We are developing each one of them through a systematic process." |
