An interdepartmental commission approved the candidates on April 26 and October 12."General training started on November 15. The course will last for slightly more than 18 months, until July 2012. Prospective cosmonauts will study cosmonautics theory, acquire technical skills and analyze results of research and experiments," said Roscomos spokesperson Irina Rogova. In addition, they will be trained to pilot aircraft, to make parachute jumps and to perform medical and biological missions. "Fundamentals of spaceship testing, zero gravity modeling, diving and spacesuit training will also be taught," Rogova said. Russia has three cosmonauts units: the Cosmonaut Training Center (GCTC), RSC Energia and the Institute of Medical and Biological Problems (IMBP) of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The training center unit currently has 22 members. |
