There's a line in the STS-1 transcript that I'm curious about.

At around 12 minutes MET (mission elapsed time), Columbia passed beyond the tracking station at Bermuda and was out of contact until AOS (acquisition of signal) at Madrid. However, in the transcript, the PAO says they were still receiving data in the control center.

How were they still getting data if the shuttle was LOS (loss of signal) at the time?
