From the Mobile (Alabama) Register:
NASA facility near Mississippi's Gulf Coast celebrates 30 years of testing shuttle engines
quote:
NASA's Stennis Space Center celebrated its 30th anniversary of testing space shuttle engines with the thunderous ignition of a shuttle main engine Thursday at its facility in south Mississippi.

Members of the news media and tourists were allowed to witness the test, which lasted about 6 minutes and produced a huge, white cloud of vapor that drifted away from the steel-and-concrete structure on which the rocket engine was mounted.

You have ruined my day, Robert!

For the first time in my life, I was within a 40 minute drive of astronauts (Fred Haise, no less!) and I didn't even know about it!

Guess I should start reading the newspaper more. ;-)

I'm going to go sulk for the rest of the weekend. :-(

Sorry, Brian. The newspaper articles about this event disagree over whether this was a private, invite-only celebration or open to the public.

Either way, no mention of this event appeared in any of my daily Sightings searches until today, after the fact. Sorry.

Hhheeeyyy...I was just joking. It's cool. It seems like Fred Haise hosts a lot of things there, so I'll get my chance!
