The NBC drama "The Irrational" starring Jesse L. Martin just aired the "Overview Effect" (Season 2, Episode 16) featuring a space-themed plot.Written by Mark Goffman, who consulted former NASA astronaut Terry Virts, the episode centers around the threat of an ammonia coolant leak aboard the International Space Station and flying a married couple on the crew to do the repairs. This is a drama and not a documentary, so I am not going to list off what they got wrong, but I do think it is worth watching for the details they got right, including: - The look of the ISS control room and the data being shown on the screens.
- The look of the ISS; in particular, the experiment airlock and other details in the Kibo module.
- The blending of NASA archival film of neutral buoyancy training and the "underwater" scenes with actors in fairly good NBL mockup spacesuits.
- The mention of the PGT, or pistol grip tool — the specialized power drill used in space.
- The use of SpaceX Falcon 9 launch footage.
I looked but didn't see a cameo by Virts (there is one by another person in the space community) but there are a few nice nods to him, including fictional versions of his STS-130 and Expedition 43 mission patches and a sign for the capcom "T. Virtz".The episode is now streaming on Peacock.
