Jimmy Carter, 39th President of the United States, died Sunday (Dec. 29) at his home in Plains, Georgia. He was 100, the longest-lived president in U.S. history. Members of the public are encouraged to visit the official tribute website to the life of President Carter. This site includes the official online condolence book as well as print and visual biographical materials commemorating his life. Carter was in office from 1977 to 1981. He was the president when the two Voyager probes left Earth; when NASA recruited its first women, Black and Asian astronauts, and when the Skylab orbital workshop fell back to Earth. At the Kennedy Space Center in Florida on Oct. 1, 1978, President Jimmy Carter, hand on waist, is briefed on preparations for the first space shuttle launch by center director Lee Scherer. To the left of Carter is NASA Administrator Robert Frosch. Carter's voice continues to travel beyond our solar system on the Voyager Golden Record. His message, as included on both probes, was: This is a present from a small distant world, a token of our sounds, our science, our images, our music, our thoughts, and our feelings. We are attempting to survive our time so we may live into yours. We hope someday, having solved the problems we face, to join a community of galactic civilizations. This record represents our hope and our determination, and our good will in a vast and awesome universe. Carter's most important decision as it pertains to space exploration may be the support he gave for funding the continued development of the space shuttle. Without the additional money NASA received in 1979 and 1980 — years in which Carter otherwise sought broad spending cuts — the winged orbiters may have never left the ground.Although Carter was known to favor NASA’s science missions over launching astronauts, he saw value in moving forward with the space transportation system. As he told Ars Technica in 2016: I was not enthusiastic about sending humans on missions to Mars or outer space. But I thought the shuttle was a good way to continue the good work of NASA. I didn't want to waste the money already invested. Carter visited Kennedy Space Center twice, once in 1978 to celebrate the 20th anniversary of NASA and then as a former president with his wife, Rosalyn in 2002. During his first trip, he awarded the Congressional Space Medal of Honor to Neil Armstrong, Frank Borman, Pete Conrad, John Glenn, Gus Grissom and Alan Shepard. During a 2002 visit to Kennedy Space Center, former President Jimmy Carter (center) receives a special presentation from Center Director Roy D. Bridges Jr. With Carter is his wife, former first lady Rosalyn Carter. Beyond his interactions with NASA, Carter was hailed for his decades of volunteer service after he left office. He was honored in 2002 with the Nobel Peace Prize. NASA Administrator Bill Nelson said in statement: President Carter was the pinnacle of a public servant, dedicating his life to making our world a better place. He showed us each and every person has the power to make a difference. From providing for those in need, protecting the environment and championing civil and human rights, President Carter was a good man who always strove to do what was right. He embodied the very best of humanity and his life and legacy are an example to the United States and the world. Public memorials will be held in Atlanta and in Washington, D.C., followed by a private interment in Plains, Georgia. The final arrangements for Carter's state funeral, including all public events and motorcade routes, will be released by the Joint Task Force-National Capital Region. |

It's a pity that Carter never saw any U.S. manned spaceflight during his one-time term as POTUS... |
