Frank Fritz, who from 2010 to 2020 was the co-host of The History Channel show "American Pickers," died on Monday (Sept. 30). He was 58.From the show's account on X: Frank filmed American Pickers for over a decade. We will always remember "the bearded charmer" and his never-ending search for vintage motorcycles and bikes. Our thoughts are with Frank's loved ones during this difficult time. He will be deeply missed. And from his co-host, Mike Wolfe: I've know Frank for more then half my life and what you've seen on TV has always been what I have seen, a dreamer who was just as sensitive as he was funny. The same off camera as he was on, Frank had a way of reaching the hearts of so many by just being himself. Who would have ever dreamed we would share the cockpit of a white cargo van in front of millions of people interested in our adventures. Before the show we would take off together to places we never knew existed with no destination in mind and just the shared passion to discover something interesting and historic. We've been on countless trips and shared so many miles and I feel blessed that I was there by his side when he took one last journey home. I love you buddy and will miss you so much I know your in a better place. On a personal note, although we never met in-person, I got to spend one very enjoyable afternoon taping part of an episode with Frank and Mike, as they sought my advice by phone (on and off camera) on the value of an Apollo Applications scale model. The conceit of the show was that we knew each other, when in reality it was the first time we had spoken. But having been a fan of the show, it felt like I was chatting with old friends. My thoughts are with those who actually knew Frank, his family and (real) friends. |

I'm sure that many of you recall an episode where Mike and Frank found a stack of Apollo 11 souvenir pennants. My supervisor (and good friend of mine) bought one from the American Pickers website. He had no particular interest in spaceflight; he just wanted something from the show, and the pennants were the cheapest thing on their website at the time. He had the pennant displayed in his office for a few years, until he retired. He knew of my interest in spaceflight, so on his last day before he retired, he gave me the pennant because, as he said, "you would appreciate it more than me!" So now I have it in my office!RIP Frank. I hope you have obtained the ultimate oil can collection in the great beyond. |
