The fifth and final season of "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel" on Amazon Prime Video brings the series from the late 1950s into the early '60s and so overlaps with the start of the Space Age. A few episodes include mentions of Sputnik and a chimp flying into space.

The series' finale, which began streaming today (May 25), has Midge Maisel (Rachel Brosnahan) come face-to-face with Alan Shepard. No spoilers for those who have yet to watch — Shepard's appearance is not central to the story line — but we can now add Richard Gallagher to the list of actors who have portrayed the first American astronaut in space.

Somewhat impressively, the costume designer was able to find a Mercury 7 pin for Gallagher to wear, in addition to what appears to be a NASA Distinguished Service Medal as awarded to Shepard by President John F. Kennedy at the White House on May 8, 1961.

On a similar note, earlier in this season they had Mrs. Maisel stop near a New York newspaper stand where a number of magazines featured Yuri Gagarin on their covers. Those mags might have been Newsweek and U.S. News and World Report. It established that episode as taking place sometime in April 1961.

The show's attention to period details has been quite remarkable.

I can second the comments on attention to 50s/60s details for the show; they filmed scenes for this season at Grand Central Terminal in New York City, right across from where I work, and they pulled out some old waiting room wooden benches from storage to add authentic flavor.

All times are CT (US)
