David Prowse, the British actor who gave the imposing physical presence — but not the voice — to Darth Vader in the original "Star Wars" trilogy, died on Saturday (Nov. 28) in a hospital in London. He was 85.From "Luke Skywalker" actor Mark Hamill (via Twitter): So sad to hear David Prowse has passed. He was a kind man and much more than Darth Vader. Actor, Husband, Father, Member of the Order of the British Empire, three time British Weightlifting Champion and Safety Icon the Green Cross Code Man. He loved his fans as much as they loved him. In 2004, Prowse was a guest at the Autographica show in London, where I briefly met him while working with Buzz Aldrin. I took this photo of the two together: |

I was saddened to learn of the death of Dave Prowse, the true embodiment of Darth Vader, one of the all-time great "baddies" of the cinema. I remember meeting him (and Robert and Buzz Aldrin) at Autographica in 2004, but I had already met Dave at the original event in 2000 which became Autographica. The main guests were Al Bean, Ed Mitchell, Dick Gordon and Walt Cunningham, and it was obvious they were also delighted to meet "the Dark Lord of the Sith," and happily posed with him for photographs. One of the astronauts (I think it was Dick Gordon) told him: "I've only been to the Moon but you've been to a galaxy far, far away!" Dave was back at Autographica 2001, along with space luminaries like Alexei Leonov, Ed Mitchell, Dick Gordon, Ed Gibson and Jerry Carr. I found myself talking to him as we strolled towards the dinner venue and asked which of the Star Wars films he had enjoyed best. It was "The Empire Strikes Back." He much preferred Irvin Kershner as director, rather than George Lucas. Mark Hamill's warm-hearted tribute says it all. |

He certainly was really nice guy. Also met him at Autographica where he had some real hearty laughs chatting with my son about Bristol grammar school where he happened to be at the time. He implied he was not a model student, but my son said no one else from the school had ever made it so high in a Galactic Empire! RIP |
