NASA has a new mission for Snoopy, 50 years after the comic strip beagle first entered service for the U.S. space program.
NASA and Peanuts Worldwide announced on Tuesday (July 10) a new multiyear Space Act Agreement that provides the space agency the chance to use Snoopy and the other characters created by the late Charles M. Schulz to help promote NASA's future deep space exploration missions and its on-going efforts to engage students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) activities.

Apple and its forthcoming originals operation has landed the rights to new Peanuts content.
The tech giant, which has not-so-quietly been amassing a strong roster of talent and original productions that is said to start rolling out in 2019, has completed a deal with DHX Media to create series, specials and shorts featuring iconic Charles M. Schulz characters such as Charlie Brown, Snoopy and the entire Peanuts gang. DHX, the Canadian-based kids programming giant that acquired a stake in the Peanuts franchise in 2017, will produce all of the projects.
As part of the partnership, DHX Media is also going to produce original short-form STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) content that will be exclusive to Apple and feature astronaut Snoopy.

The first beagle on the moon has landed on the face of Timex watches.
Snoopy, who 50 years ago traveled to the moon, both in Charles Schulz' Peanuts comic strips and in real life with NASA, has again donned his astronaut spacesuit for a new collection of timepieces.
"We're celebrating with Peanuts to mark the 50-year anniversary of NASA's Apollo 11 mission and the first lunar landing in history. Among the souvenirs produced for the Apollo 11 50th anniversary were matching keychains and magnets featuring Snoopy on the moon with "1969" and "One Small Step for Man... One Giant Leap for Mankind, 50 Year Anniversary."
The design was customized for the venue with the name of the museum or NASA center. Pictured are examples from Johnson Space Center, The Museum of Flight and the U.S. Space & Rocket Center.
Has anyone seen these offered elsewhere?

Space Foundation release
Peanuts and Space Foundation Offer Free STEM Lesson Plans
The Space Foundation of Colorado Springs has collaborated with Peanuts to provide free Snoopy-themed lesson plans to improve students' skills in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
The new lesson plans coincide with the release of two Peanuts books from Simon & Schuster, "Shoot for the Moon, Snoopy!" and "Snoopy, First Beagle on the Moon!"
In announcing the newly formed relationship and the release of these materials, Space Foundation CEO Tom Zelibor offered, "This partnership allows the Space Foundation and Peanuts to provide formal and informal lesson plans and content to educators for hands-on and immersive activities, which are fun and exciting for all students."
The Space Foundation's accredited educators created the lesson plans using artwork created by cartoonist Charles M. Schulz which feature a beagle named Snoopy as an astronaut on the Moon. Snoopy's connection to NASA and the American space program started during the Apollo era, when NASA asked Schulz for permission to use America's favorite beagle as their mascot for mission safety, a tradition and commitment that continues today.
With the recent 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission to the Moon, Snoopy the Astronaut is back, helping today's students become the space leaders of the future.

BOOM! Studios release
Lift Off with 'Snoopy: A Beagle Of Mars'
Explore the Solar System with NASA and Peanuts Worldwide in December 2019
BOOM! Studios announced "Snoopy: A Beagle Of Mars," an all-new original graphic novel in partnership with Peanuts Worldwide, that launches the world's most beloved beagle on his grandest adventure yet! From Flying Ace to Astronaut in Space, Snoopy embarks on an exploratory mission to Mars in this original graphic novel written by Jason Cooper, illustrated by Robert Pope and colored by Hannah White, and available in stores December 2019.
NASA has shared a proud association with Charles M. Schulz and his American icon Snoopy since Apollo missions began in the 1960s. In May 1969, Apollo 10 astronauts traveled to the Moon with the aid of a lunar module named Snoopy and a command module named Charlie Brown. That was also the year of the first Silver Snoopy Award — given by NASA astronauts to employees and contractors for outstanding achievements related to human flight safety or mission success. Fifty years after their first collaboration, Peanuts Worldwide and NASA entered into a multiyear Space Act Agreement in 2018, engineered to inspire a passion for space exploration and STEM education among students.
In "Snoopy: A Beagle Of Mars", Snoopy, the world-famous astronaut, heads to the stars in his most out-of-this-world adventure yet! What mysteries does the red planet hold? Will he find water? Will he find life? Will he find the time to get in a quick nine holes? Snoopy grabs his golf clubs and blasts off for Mars in this original graphic novel from the world of Charles M. Schulz and Peanuts!
"Sharing a love of STEM and space exploration through the beloved Astronaut Snoopy is a great honor for us." said Craig Herman, Senior Director, Category Management, Peanuts Worldwide. "Charles Schulz inspired generations through his comic strip and characters, and I hope this graphic novel will spark the imagination of many future scientists and space travelers."
Charles M. Schulz once described himself as "born to draw comic strips." Born in Minneapolis, at just two days old, an uncle nicknamed him "Sparky" after the horse Spark Plug from the Barney Google comic strip, and throughout his youth, he and his father shared a Sunday morning ritual reading the funnies. After serving in the Army during World War II, Schulz's first big break came in 1947 when he sold a cartoon feature called Li'l Folks to the St. Paul Pioneer Press. In 1950, Schulz met with United Feature Syndicate, and on October 2nd of that year, Peanuts, named by the syndicate, debuted in seven newspapers. Charles Schulz died in Santa Rosa, California, in Feburary 2000 — just hours before his last original strip was to appear in the Sunday papers.
Jason Cooper is head writer at Charles M. Schulz Creative Associates where he has written storybooks, comic books, and graphic novels for Peanuts. He relates to Charlie Brown much more than a person should.
Cartoonist and animator Robert W. Pope has the greatest of fun drawing the Peanuts gang for BOOM! Studios. Over the years he's also drawn the adventures of the Looney Tunes gang, Scooby-Doo, the Powerpuff Girls, Johnny Bravo, and many more for DC, IDW, Disney Publishing and more.
Hannah White is a colorist and artist for Charles M. Schulz Creative Associates; a 2016 graduate of SCAD Savannah, Hannah enjoys her two cats, making comics, and playing video games.
"All systems are go in a Snoopy adventure unlike anything you've ever read before, introducing everyone's favorite beagle to the wonders of outer space as he journeys to Mars." said Chris Rosa, Editor, BOOM! Studios. "The Schulz Studio team has crafted a wonderfully fun and humorous tale so whether you're a kid or just a kid at heart, this is the kind of story that reminds you why Peanuts has such an unparalleled place in pop culture."
"Snoopy: A Beagle Of Mars" is the latest release from BOOM! Studios' award-winning KaBOOM! imprint, home to comics for middle grade and younger readers including licensed series such as Adventure Time, Steven Universe, Regular Show, Ben 10, and Over The Garden Wall, along with original series like Just Beyond: The Scare School by R.L. Stine and Kelly & Nichole Matthews, Hex Vet by Sam Davies, RuinWorldby Derek Laufman, and Pandora's Legacy by Kara Leopard, Kelly & Nichole Matthews.
Print copies of "Snoopy: A Beagle Of Mars" will be available for sale on December 18, 2019 at local comic book shops, bookstores and the BOOM! Studios webstore. Digital copies can be purchased from content providers, including comiXology, iBooks, Google Play, and the BOOM! Studios app.

Astronaut Snoopy is ready to fly, but like past spacesuited explorers, the weather may scrub his launch.

Snoopy, "the world famous astronaut," has reached new heights — above the streets of New York City and aboard the International Space Station.
The Peanuts comic strip beagle took flight in real life on Thursday (Nov. 28), as a new, NASA-inspired giant balloon in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade and as a plush doll floating aboard the orbiting laboratory. NASA crew members Jessica Meir and Christina Koch from on board the space station revealed the Astronaut Snoopy doll in a video shown as part of NBC's television coverage of the holiday celebration.

Just a week before the first crew took up residency on the International Space Station 20 years ago, NASA's 100th space shuttle mission landed back on Earth. To celebrate that milestone, the space agency's employee morale organization distributed a special Snoopy doll, clad in a spacesuit, that recognized the "Peanuts pooch ... as a symbol of excellence for the human space flight program."
Two decades later, the comic strip beagle is back at work at NASA, promoting crew safety on a new series of posters that commemorate 20 years of humans on the space station.

The intrepid space explorer, who in 1969 became the world's first beagle to land on the lunar surface — at least in the Peanuts comic strips drawn by the late Charles M. Schulz — is set to fly for real aboard NASA's first Artemis mission in 2022. Snoopy, in plush form, will serve as the "zero-g indicator" on the Artemis I Orion spacecraft as it loops around the moon.

It's marketed as "Snoopy Nebula" and is basically Snoopy with a nebula print (stars, gas clouds, etc.). I don't recall it being a specific reference to something in the series, but it matches the background on the title cards.

The upcoming launch of a beagle to the moon has inspired the return of a decades-old poster at NASA.
As earlier announced, Snoopy, the pet dog from Charles Schulz' Peanuts comic strip, will fly in doll form aboard NASA's Artemis I mission around the moon and back. The toy, wearing a one-of-a-kind spacesuit, will serve as the flight's zero-g indicator, floating "weightless" once in orbit.
To celebrate Snoopy's latest spaceflight and continue the character's nearly 55-year-old role as a safety mascot and symbol for mission success, NASA's Space Flight Awareness (SFA) program has a created a new motivational poster based on a design that was first used almost 30 years ago.

The widow of Peanuts' creator Charles M. Schulz has been recognized for being a "huge champion" of NASA and inspiring millions of people around the world by sending Snoopy to the moon.

The award was in response to Schulz's role in extending the legacy and vision of her late husband by building upon the partnership between Peanuts Worldwide and NASA.
