That's an awesome story and typifies the man. One certainly earning of an ego - who simply had none. Briefly mentioned was his flying bombing missions in the F-86 during the Korean War - that's rather an understatement. He was sent there to prove the capabilities and help train the pilots. But what's never spoken was that he actually had some aerial victories. The USAF and our government did not want that to become common knowledge for whatever reason but the troops new. He had four victories before being shot down in WWII, and became an Ace in Korea, but that's not well known. A true hero, and friend. |

National Air and Space Museum, thank you for arranging his lecture in DC. I love his WWII story of escaping the German prison, commandeering a German fighter, aiming for friendly lines with markings that would cause allies to aim back... |

I had the rare opportunity to see Mr. Hoover in Topeka, KS for one of their "SuperBatics" Air Show in the late 1970s as a kid. What he was capable of doing with an airplane was just awesome. Cut the engines, land dead stick, and still have the energy to roll to the tarmac in front of the air show crowd was a memory I won't forget. His smile was captured on a photograph my family now has and I will cherish it forever. |
