"The Martian" has been nominated for seven Academy Awards (Oscars): Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Production Design, Best Visual Effects, Best Sound Mixing and Best Sound Editing.

Ridley Scott was not nominated, however, for Best Director. Andy Weir commented:

Conspicuously absent is Best Director. I'd be lying if I said that wasn't a huge disappointment to me. Ridley Scott made a masterpiece out of my scribblings. I'm truly baffled as to how he got left out.

I read that the source data for The Martian is all "2K", and the 4k Blu-ray is simply unconverted.

It's probably not worth the extra money or effort to get the 4k version.

A special edition Blu-ray of "The Martian" is coming, Bill Hunt reports.
Fox reps confirmed to me during the event that a new and much more elaborate The Martian: Special Edition Blu-ray is currently in production for release in the not-too-distant future. I'm told it’s not officially on their release schedule yet, but you can probably expect it before the end of the year, in time for the holidays.

Best Buy has begun selling 4K DVDs a couple of weeks early and only $27.99, $2 cheaper than 1080p version, which the 4K discs also have.

'The Martian' landed no Oscars at the 88th Academy Awards.
"The Martian" was left stranded without any Oscars on Sunday night (Feb. 28) at the 88th Academy Awards.

Ridley Scott's science fiction film about a NASA astronaut (Matt Damon) being left for dead on Mars received seven nominations — including Best Picture and Best Actor — but ended the evening with no wins.

"It's pretty cool just to be nominated," wrote Andy Weir, author of the book on which the "The Martian" is based, in a post on Facebook. "Slowly but surely, science fiction is worming its way into popular culture and mainstream entertainment. I'm proud to be a small part of that."

I wasn't surprised as the film was up against some VERY strong competition.

Andy Weir should be very proud as I believe his book/movie was a significant cause of the enormous NASA recruitment turnout effected this year.

So one of my guys in our group had one of the potatoes from the ad campaign for "The Martian." It was getting old so he thought what would Mark Watney do, well cut it in four and plant it!

He picked up an old aircraft battery box and with a little earth dirt and water here is what he has so far. He plans on growing the potatoes and then use them for replanting and powering a potato clock, Mark would be proud!!

Andy Weir has been invited to testify before the U.S. House of Representatives' Subcommittee on Space as part of a May 18 hearing on "Next Steps to Mars: Deep Space Habitats."

Hate when they release these things after, this should have been a choice from the very beginning.

I watched the extended version tonight. Most of the new scenes are just quick conversations between people for a few seconds. But the Chem experiments scene is now in it as well as Watney using a portable hab to take off his surface suit during the trek to Schiaparelli. Most of the good stuff is in the extras. Only $19.99 at Target!

A quick heads-up for European/African/Aus/NZ members.

I'd read that, despite the packaging saying The Martian Extended Edition Blu-Ray was Region A, they were okay in Region B players.

I took a punt on a copy from the US and I'm happy to report that both the feature film disc and bonus features disc are playing fine in my Region B Blu-Ray player here in the UK.
