We do not recommend you consume the potato after it has traveled across the country inside of trucks, planes, and postal service bags. It has touched a lot of germs by the time it arrives to the recipient. Consume them!?! Ya just gotta chop 'em and plant 'em! |

I found a set of patches from an eBay costume store for use in cosplay. They aren't bad. They also have a set with Commander Lewis. My potato has yet to arrive... |

I saw those sets when I was hunting for an Ares III patch...noticed that the "Lewis" nametag has a gold version of Watney's wings, instead of the proper Navy pair. |

I'm not surprised to hear that. That vendor is a pretty well-known vendor for sci-fi costumer types as a company that can be summed up often as, "Close enough" but nowhere near dead-on with anything they make... |

Well, my potato arrived today, but it only had regular stamps on it, and not the Bring Him Home stamp. I am not sure what went wrong, or maybe since I didn't get in the 1000 free potato group, I didn't get it. But $9.99 for a potato I am not supposed eat is a big disappointment. |

The ones in the photo are correct for the film, but frankly, the book didn't really give me a picture of a military astronaut at all. I was surprised to see the movie character with AF wings... |

Same here... in both the novel and the film, Commander Lewis (Navy) and MDV/MAV pilot Martinez (Air Force) are the only crew members explicitly stated to have military backgrounds. |

The press kit for the Ares 3 mission, as released by Fox (see the link earlier in this thread) provides the following back story for Watney: A Chicago native, Watney attended the University of Chicago for his undegrad before moving on to Northwestern University where he earned a PhD in Plant Biology and Conservation with an emphasis in hydropedalogy and environmental engineering. While a graduate student, he had his first experience with NASA by becoming a research fellow with the Graduate Student Researchers Program (GSRP).His work focused on hydrologic flow paths and sustainable water resources management within the Earth’s Critical Zone. Mark then spent two years in the Peace Corps engineering sustainable agriculture and water irrigation systems for developing nations. Upon returning, he applied to the NASA Astronaut Candidate Program... As for the other Ares 3 crew members, Lewis "graduated with honors from the US Naval Academy," Martinez served "eleven decorated years of service in the United States Air Force," and Beck is a "captain in the United States Air Force Reserves." |

Unfortunately, per Fox, only the 1,000 free potatoes shipped with "The Martian" stamp. |

Obviously, the book didn't go this far, but by showing the Ares V launch at the end, do we assume Ares IV was cancelled because it no longer had a MAV on Mars? |

I saw the movie The Martian last night. I liked it and it was very entertaining. I also like the fact that a lot of space-themed movies have been released recently, hopefully to raise the public's awareness of actual space programs here on Earth. But I was also disappointed with the movie. It's a standard Hollywood thriller and you could substitute James Bond and suitable locations with no change in plot - hero gets in trouble, hero fights back, lots of fire and explosions, personal interest story of trust and deceit, hero gets rescued. The movie missed or simplified most of the technical details in the book, such as the difficulties of starting a farm on Mars, connecting different comm systems, and the wayword trek across the planet to the pick-up zone. Summary? A good Hollywood space movie, but I'm waiting for the 5-hour version that contains all the nuances of Andy Weir's superb book. |

Fox is planning a commercial virtual reality (VR) experience based on "The Martian" for release in 2016, The New York Times reports: In a major step toward the integration of blockbuster films with virtual reality techniques, 20th Century Fox and its internal Fox Innovation Lab are preparing for the commercial release of a so-called VR experience, using special headsets from Oculus and other devices. In the first half of 2016, it will take viewers deep inside the imperiled life of Mark Watney, an astronaut marooned on a dead red planet in "The Martian."Although thrilling, the experience can be unsettling for some. "You feel anxiety and success, a series of emotions," the filmmaker Robert Stromberg said in warning shortly before cuing up a preview of the adventure. In its final form, it is expected to last from 15 to 25 minutes, but its length will actually be elastic, as different viewers linger to look for details hidden among the interactive folds of the experience. |

Per Andy Weir on Facebook: We're working on a "school-friendly edition" of "The Martian" for release some time in 2016. Basically, it's just a version of the book with the profanities removed or replaced with softer words so schools can put it in their curricula without people objecting. (Don't worry, the normal version of the book won't be affected. This is just a special version for schools.) |

There's grumping over this in the comments of the original FB post, but knowing that Andy Weir is doing the edits himself makes it okay for me, along with the fact that the original book that is of course still available. More people reading this, the better, in my opinion. |

Went to see the movie on Sunday and I was greatly impressed. I am sure in time this will turn out to be one of the classics of the genre. When the "Chinese" rocket is about to be launched there is a comment that "We haven't done anything like this since Apollo 9" and I have been wondering what this could refer to? |

Bill Hunt, of The Digital Bits (and cS) summarizes the Blu-ray extras: 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment has officially set Ridley Scott's The Martian for Blu-ray 3D, Blu-ray and DVD release on 1/12, with the HD digital release due on 12/22. The disc is set to include 90-minutes worth of special features, among them 3 documentary featurettes (Signal Acquired: Writing and Direction, Occupy Mars: Casting and Costumes, and Ares III: Refocused), all 5 of the "in-world" promotional featurettes that were created for the film (Ares III: Farewell, The Right Stuff, Ares: Our Greatest Adventure, Leave Your Mark, and Bring Him Home), a gag reel, and a production gallery. That batch of extras seems a little light, and the lack of audio commentary by Scott makes me wonder if there isn't a more elaborate version coming at some point. |

"The Martian" has been nominated for three Golden Globe awards: - Best Motion Picture, Comedy
- Actor in a motion picture, comedy: Matt Damon
- Director: Ridley Scott
The Hollywood Foreign Press' choice to classify "The Martian" as a comedy has generated some controversy, but the Globes has categorized dramas with comedic moments as comedies in the past (e.g. 2005's "Pride and Prejudice"). |

Several of the shuttle astronauts at the ASF November show said "The Martian" was one of their favorite space movies. With a couple exceptions (propelling oneself through space by using a self induced hole in a glove) they thought it was very realistic. |

Tonight at the Golden Globes, "The Martian" won best motion picture, comedy and Matt Damon won best actor in a motion picture, comedy.Asked backstage if he thought "The Martian" was really a comedy, Damon replied, "It's a musical." |

This what Andy Weir said about the win: I'm thrilled to see Matt and Ridley get the recognition they deserve for making such an amazing film. I can't believe how lucky I was to end up with people like that bringing my book to life. My utmost congratulations to both of them and everyone involved in the production.(Note: The subcategory that The Martian was in, "Comedy or Musical" is sort of a mystery in the Globes. Of the five films nominated for Best Picture in that category, only two were definitively comedies. That's just the way things work I guess.) |

In a world where, unfortunately, very little makes sense, "The Martian" winning as a comedy seems perfectly normal. |

Bill Hunt suggests it may be because a deluxe version is still to come: In terms of extras, you'd be forgiven if you were expecting a loaded special edition from Fox. This disc is not it… which is odd, because of any Ridley Scott film, this one seems to most obviously deserve the deluxe "Lauzirika" treatment, if you will. What you do get is mostly quite good, there's just not nearly enough of it....honestly, the most surprising thing here is the lack of a Ridley Scott audio commentary. There's just no way that Ridley doesn't have much to say about this film, so this could be a strong clue that there's a better special edition of this film in the planning stages for release on Blu-ray later this year (beyond the Blu-ray 3D version available [1/12], and the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray version due on 3/1). Only time will tell. |

There is a video special feature on the Blu-ray I haven't seen called "Ares III: Refocused" which is sort of like a news feature interviewing the NASA staff and the behind the scenes drama that unfolded. Sean Bean and Jeff Daniels are both in it, in character. |

It was also in the iTunes extras. It was pretty good. It may fill in the blanks a little for those that didn't'read the book. I think its a retrospective format from 6 years after the mission ended. |

The DVD special features are the videos they put on YouTube, with interviews and press release videos. Most interesting is a series of interviews with a few of the cast in character after a prolonged period of isolation.Nothing groundbreaking but still pretty neat to watch. Didn't have time to watch the entire film last night, though... |
