In the film "Koyaanisqatsi" there are two rocket launch sequences. One is an ultra slow motion of a Saturn V launch from right at the launch pad level. An incredible video. The other is the launch and subsequent explosion of an Atlas missile. Does anyone know exactly what Saturn V and Atlas launches these were?

The Atlas is the first Atlas-Centaur May 8, 1962. Helpful clues are a flapping liquid nitrogen line by the vernier engine and the venting liquid hydrogen some seconds into flight.

The sequences of the Centaur and then the Atlas breakups are very telling also.

Thanks on the Atlas. I thought that thing (nitrogen line) flapping around at the base of the rocket seemed strange.

On the Saturn V sequences I would love to know the film speed (frames per second) they used. You can see the ice fall so slowly and the engine exhaust, hold down release, and swing arm retract so vividly. Amazing footage. I remember seeing this footage and being awed when I first saw Koyaanisqatsi for the first time in the early 80s.

I love Philip Glass (used to go to his operas when I lived in London) but had not heard him in many years - thanks for posting about these, just beautiful...

...although, for a sublime mix of space imagery and music, it is hard to beat this one...
