Space Station Crew Exchanges Seasons Greetings with Earth
Soaring high above the Earth, the crew of the International Space Station beamed down season's greetings.
The public can return the extraterrestrial good will and send greetings to the crew.
The e-mailed greetings can be sent through Jan. 5, 2009. Last year, thousands of messages were sent to the Expedition 16 crew from throughout the world.
As the holidays pass aboard the International Space Station, the crew may make Christmas cookies, chocolate covered pecans and candied yams as they celebrate the season. Those items are available in the pantry for Expedition 18 Commander Mike Fincke and Flight Engineers Sandy Magnus and Yuri Lonchakov.
Magnus made it a point to request that red, green, yellow, blue and white icing be among her foods to be used to decorate an assortment of cinnamon, shortbread and butter cookies also carried aloft. The crew also has a variety of candies to continue the high-calorie traditions so common on Earth this time of year.
Along with the sweets, the crew's food may include smoked turkey, cornbread dressing and mashed potatoes. Fincke also has included asparagus, shrimp cocktail, dried blueberries, tropical fruit, wheat flat bread and brown rice.
Of course, since a refrigerator is only a very recent arrival aboard the station, the food items all must be prepared to keep at room temperature for long periods, so they are irradiated, freeze dried or otherwise preserved. But the view at the dining table from 220 miles up cannot be beat.
The crew also will have holiday gifts from family and friends to open, recently delivered to the station aboard a Russian cargo ship earlier this month.
To all our readers and members,
As we enter our tenth year online in 2009, we wish you a joyous holiday season and a very spacey New Year!

The last 12 months have been interesting for a number of reasons, not least of which have been the contacts and correspondence made with many fellow members of this forum; far too many to list individually.
If I may I would like to take this opportunity to send each and every member my Greetings for the festive season and my Best Wishes for the forthcoming year!

I'd like to second that 'Best wishes and peace on and above the Earth to all'.
On a rather sad note, tomorrow December the 16th 2008 I'll be the same age as NASA...

A very beautiful card.
Reminds me of the several commercial designs that were available in 1969... and there were at least one and maybe two or three church bulletin covers that used the Apollo 8 Earthrise picture.
Nice stuff for us space collectors, to be sure!
Merry Christmas!

Happy New Year, friends!
I took this opportunity to do a quick patchwork sampler from my collection of the signatures of some of my heroes, past and present!
Here's to long, happy lives for all astronauts, cosmonauts, taikonauts, their friends and families, the workers who support them, and those of us who admire their work! We wish them all the best in 2009.

From their vantage point 220 miles above Earth, the International Space Station crew expressed their year-end thoughts on the significance of the outpost and their New Year's wish for the complex in 2009.
The crew also shared their wish for peace in the languages of all of the countries represented in the space station partnership.
