I would like to encourage everyone to remember the veterans today. Give thanks to them for the freedom that we have. I also like to think of the troops that are serving our country today. I would like to give thanks to the astronauts that are veterans. Most were military pilots who served our country in our armed forces then again with NASA. With respect. Mike Myer Humboldt KS |

Last year my wife and I were overseas in Nashville for the Veterans' Day march, and we cheered just as loud as everyone. Yesterday in Sydney (Australia's a day ahead timewise) it was what we call Armistice Day here, and I was thrilled when the radio station we always listen to played the Last Post just before 11:00 a.m., and then they observed a complete minute's silence. In these days of troubles and anxieties it was lovely to know that a commercial radio station will still observe this wonderful tradition, and more importantly this mark of respect to those people who gave their lives for their countries. Lest we forget. |

I just got back from a symposium of Iwo Jima, Okinawa, Bataan death march, B-17, battleship Alabama, and Easy Company (Band of Brothers) vets. My god what these guys went through!! We can't thank them enough.Dutch vanKirk (the Enola Gay navigator) was also there. I had to thank him especially for saving my dad's life - Dad was in the First Marine Division on Okinawa, and they were starting to train for the invasion of Japan when the bomb fell. They were going to be in the first wave... |

What a wonderful sentiment, Mike! One of my employees, NASA Photographer Louis A. Rosales, is currently deployed in the Middle East fulfilling his duty as a U.S. Naval Reservist. Lou calls and e-mails at every opportunity to express his wonderment at the successes of STS-114 and The Station. He's ready to come back and help us go back to the moon. |

I had the same experience a few years ago with Colonel Paul Tibbets, the Pilot of the Enola Gay.My Dad was biding time on a ship in the Pacific awainting a probable amphibious landing in Japan where there would have been terrible carnage on both sides. I'm convinced the A bomb,as terrible, yet necessary as it was, saved many lifes including my Dad. (Also thanks to Harry Truman, a proud doughboy veteran of WWI). I thanked Col. Tibbets for saving my Dad's and many other lifes, and I thought he was going to cry. This surprised me as I'm sure he had heard this many times. It proved to me again that we all like to be appreciated and thanked. Thank you Ladies and Gentleman for your sacrifices. I would like to take this opportunity to recognize not only astronauts/aviators who have served this great country, but also those veterans of all foreign wars including the brave soldiers who have served (fighting the good fight) in Iraq & Afghanistan.God Bless America! |

I've been reading Tony Hillerman's memoir, "Seldom Disappointed". What he and his co-infantrymen went through in WWII is unbelievable. We owe all the men and women in our military services a huge debt.
