Hello all , hey im excited to say that i won the day w Gen Collins at astro auction i actually did it for my little boy , but my wife doesnt believe that for a second... anyway i was thinking that if you guys had any questions here at CS id compile a little list of maybe a dozen or so questions that we all had here at CS and ask him myself the answers first person. what do you guys think , dumb idea ? anyway i really am most excited at the fact that i can provide my young son with an opportunity to spend a brief time with a true history maker. i figure that someday he will have fond memories of his wacky dads ideas , any thoughts ??? good day gents , Eddie

Eddie,

Congratulations. I do have a question that I know people have been asking. What has prompted General Collins to start marketing his signature and selling his collection at auction?

Thanks,

Congratulations Eddie,

You might ask him whether this is the first of many such signings.

Regards,

Rick.

Good to hear that you will get to spend the day with the Gen.!

Given he has written a book on the subject, I would be curious to know what General Collins thoughts are on the Mars initiative?

Congratulations...! Hopefully you will have at least one opportunity to ask how he feels about those of us who collect spaceflight history and related artifacts. I suspect you will be a good emissary.

Congratulations on your win, should be a day to remember.

Would you mind asking him if he knows why his Gemini 7 training glove is in such a battered condition? I bought it a couple of years ago and it's just rubber rags on a wrist disconnect. I'm sure everyone else would like to know the answer to that question.

Anybody?...

Ah, just me then.

On a serious note I'd definitely read 'Carrying the Fire' again before you see him. It's bound to give you loads of ideas for things to ask (and a few not to ).

Cheers,
Matt

Hi,

Congratulations on your win...I`m sure it will be a most memorable day.

I`m still buzzing from meeting Neil Armstrong back in November...

Enjoy the experience.......

I would be interested to know why he had decided to sign after all this time. ??

Regards,

Andrew

Can you ask him if he can persuade John Young to do the same?

Even better, ask him about this: can he persuade Neil and Buzz to join him in a limited edition Apollo 11 crew-signing for charity? Sign 200 crew pictures (numbered maybe) and sell them for $5000 each. Instant $1,000,000 for a good cause of their choice!

Anyway, congratulations on your win (especially as the money goes to charity anyway)!

hi again , like i said before i will politely ask Gen Collins a few questions , and by the time i do see him , i will have reread his book once again , but my main reason is just to let my little boy bask in the presence of a real life astronaut, i want him to have plenty of memories and neat stuff so he can share with his little buddies at school , and show-and-tell , and hopefully someday be able to share this expirience whis his kids..... im going to try my absolute best not to be a complete knucklehead , and just quietly watch , observe , and have a happy scense of appreciation and admiration for the man and his accomplishments . i constantly work and spend long days around and close to some of the biggest celebrities in the world , my being in the film business , none of them really acheiving any real historical significance, nor getting much of my admiration, but someone such as this man will have my absolute respect. id be lying if i didnt say that i was quite excited , and to be able to see my son spending a little time with this man , it will be quite some memories for me alone. i remember a few months ago when my son and i met Mr. Neil Armstrong and spent a little time with him , i had goosebumps just watching , and the pictures we have of that time with him are priceless.( ck earlier posts about our adventures w Mr. Arm) anyway i will do my very best to represent us here at CS and ask as many questions you all wanna know whenever the opportunity or mood dictates... Congrats on winning the auction. Are you sure you will be able to take your son with you? The add clearly states that the auction is for one person, no kids, spouses, or families.

Eddie,

Please try to convince the General that we autograph collectors, as a whole, are not evil and conniving people!

Congratulations and enjoy!

Congrats Eddie!
Here's a question you might ask. Considering John Glenn's return to orbit in '98 created such new interest in space exploration,
*Would Gen. Collins be interested in a future shuttle flight if offered the opportunity? And why or why not?*
Also, how old is your son? I hope he's old enough to understand just who it is he'll be meeting. Perhaps you could school him a bit on Gen. Collins' career, of course highlighting Apollo 11. That might help him to remember his visit more.
I've taken my two nephews to Kennedy Space Center three times for the launch of STS-104, meeting Story Musgrave and Jon McBride, respectively. It really made a difference and they enjoyed each trip very much!
And one more thing! Please take LOTS of photos and video for the rest of us drooling on the other side of your computer monitor screen!
Have fun! Rob

Hi could you ask him how he felt being in the space program in the 60's and living in Houston, while the other military pilots in the 60's had to leave their families and go to war, flying missions over vietnam, some never to return.
Thanks

Hi Red Planet,

Your post made me research Collins a little, as I was sure he, being in the miliary and the same age as Aldrin and the civilian Armstrong, had served in Korea with them. His official NASA bio:
http://www.jsc.nasa.gov/Bios/htmlbios/collins-m.html

(unlike theirs) mentions nothing about it, so I assume he didn't. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

But he *is* offering his autograph to us for hundreds of dollars. I don't see any Vietnam vets doing that.

Please ask him if he ever saw this one on the web. It's hilarious.

Michael Collins reminisces..

Look at Neil, doesn't he look gormless? Neil 'Moonface' Armstrong, that's what we used to call him. Can you believe that they let him be in charge? He was so pleased with himself, the power went straight to his stupid round head, in training he was always making us do jobs for him "Michael, can you make me some iced tea?", "Buzz, will you clean my spaceman boots?" If we said no, it would always be the same "Do you want to go to space or not? .. Do you?" What could we do?
Back in the old country we had lots of words for people like Armstrong, "Smug arsehole", "Bogbrain", "Person most likely to lose their kneecaps."
He was childish too. All the way to moon, it was "Buzz, are YOU looking forward to walking on the moon?", and "Michael, YOU can tidy the Colombia Orbiter while WE are on the moon." I tell you, if Buzz hadn't gone down there too, I'd have turned that tincan straight back round and left Moonface down there on his beloved moon. See how long the ******* moonfaced half-wit would have been taking giant ******* leaps with no ******* OXYGEN. The **** .

On the other hand, I have nothing but respect for Buzz. Buzz Aldrin is a handsome man. A man's man.

Buzz recalls...

I remember very little about the trip, in all the excitement to get ready I forgot to go to the washroom. As soon as they strapped us in and closed the hatch I realised that I could probably do with a visit to the little boy's room (or LBR to use the standard NASA terminology, (Or SNT,as we would say in NASA.)) There wasn't a lot I could do, and it wasn't too bad at that point, so I thought 'oh well.' The exhilaration of the take-off took my mind off it to some extent though the g-forces squashing my bladder didn't help.

Once we were in orbit round the earth, the combination of zero-G and all those damn coffee pills soon had me TAKII (tying a knot in it). It is very hard to concentrate when you need to go as badly as I did, I barely noticed the grandeur and majesty of our small planet seen from space, in fact I just rocked desperately back and forth in my space chair and kept asking Mickey if we were there.

Then when we finally did reach the moon, Armstrong knew I was absolutely bursting, but he insisted on doing all the coreographed slow motion melodrama that NASA had rehearsed. I was kicking him down that ladder but he just played it straight out of the NASA publicity handbook (NPH), I haven't spoken to him since. I tell you getting behind that rock and letting loose was a bigger thrill than landing, I was walking on the moon, so to speak.

Moonface Armstrong retells his incredible story, yet again...

"I was the first man on the moon! Me. Neil Aldin Armstrong, I went to space and I landed my space plane on the moon, the real moon, like you see up in the sky. Me, Neil Armstrong, I did it! Then, when we had got to the moon, I went out of our spaceship and down the ladder onto the ground. As I did it I said my famous words, "It's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." That was my own idea, not what Edwin told me to say which was "This is me Neil Armstrong, I'm on the moon." and anyone who says not, is a liar.. Anyway, I was first.

And Michael Collins didn't walk on the moon at all.

The NASA men said he had an attitude problem. On the moon I used to joke to Edwin "I bet Mad Mickey Collins is mad he's not here on the moon with us!", I didn't tell my joke to Michael, he has no sense of humour, in fact he was quite scary.

Seriously though, just thank him for all the years of sacrifice.
