Does anyone remember the last show in Chicago where they had astronauts present for signings? If I remember correctly it was at a UACC show several years ago and they had 3-4 astronauts present. Of coarse I was not back into astronaut autographs and didn't take advantage of their presence. It keeps me up at night! Also, is there any plans in the works for a show in Chicago featuring astronauts like they had in DC and now in California in 2004? Chicago is centrally located and would make an excellent choice. Can't afford to go to California or for DC for that matter and would really like to meet some of our heros and of coarse some of our fellow members. I do recall that show - perhaps summer of 2000? I flew up from Charlotte to meet everyone: Scott Carpenter, Charlie Duke, Edgar Mitchell, Dick Gordon and Alan Bean.It was a lot of fun - the first time that I had ever met Apollo-era astronauts. Sorry to hear that you missed it! Jonathan |

Dave,I too was there, August of 2000. Last minute, Gordo Cooper cancelled, bummer. It was a real treat to meet Cunningham, Duke, Gordon, Mitchell and Bean. It was also nice to meet some members of our hobby that we chat with from time to time here on CS too. I hope to have the same opportunity to meet them again and have my son have his picture taken with them(wife was expecting in Aug 2000). Ed |

I was present at that show in 2000. What a great time! I was fortunate to see them all the night before the autograph event, in the bar having dinner with their wives. I didn't impose on them during their dinner, but I did manage a short conversation with Dick Gordon afterward. Just to be in the same room with them was a great thrill. I asked the waiter if he knew who they were and he replied no, but he could tell that they were special people. I informed him that he was serving 3 men that had walked on the Moon, and his face lit up!!!! During a moment of glorious inebriation I had the waiter pilfer Charlie Duke's emtpy beer bottle, after they had all retired. Not a moment I am proud of, but it seemed a good move at the time. It still sits on my computer hutch with an autographed EVA litho of Gen. Duke. It was a great event and one of the greatest moments of my life.Regards, Bill uzzi69 |

I remember that event well. It was my first, and so far, only trip to Chicago. I went specifically to meet Charlie Duke and Dick Gordon. I wanted their signatures for my collection. Plus meeting them was an honor, of course. It was Aug 25-26, 2000. My departure from Hartford that Friday afternoon did not go well. My original flight was canceled. First time that ever happened to me. I was rebooked for a flight about 4 hours later. Then that one was delayed 2 hours! I did not get to the hotel until almost 9 pm CT, as I recall. By that time the autograph show was over for the evening. The next morning I met the astronauts and got my autographs. Had I been able to do this on Friday night I would have had much more time for sightseeing. As I was only staying for 2 nights, I had to get my whirlwind look at Chicago done in just a few hours. I went to the Sears Tower, and the Museum of Science. The space displays at the museum were great. It was a thrill to see the Apollo 8 CM. |

To bad you couldn't get a sight seeing tour of the city. The lake front is beautiful ands we have some great museums and restaurants. At least you were able to go to the Museum Of Science and Industry. I'm 51 years old and I never get tired of that place. Went there again this year. I'm really saddened that I didn't attend the Astronaut-UACC show. I wasn't much involved with my collecting then and I blew a chance to meet some great astronauts. I'm also disappointed that there doesn't seem to be any plans to have another show in Chicago anytime soon. Maybe Robert could put a good word in for my city. 2005? I think my city offers so much. Lovell's restaurant, great museums, other great places to dine, John Hancock and Sears Towers, centrally located in the country. And most importantly, I would love to meet my fellow CS members! Hello Dave and others,For your information, the UACC Autograph show you refer to and others that have been held around the country are promoted by myself and Nolan Sims. Our pal Robert (I love that guy!), of collectSPACE is not directly involved in the development these events although has participated in a few of our events (Houston, D.C.)where he had a table, sponsored two celebrity guests, and ran the ASF Silent Auction (which was very successful). Requests or thoughts regarding any aspects of the Sims/Hankow promoted-UACC Autograph Shows should be directed to myself or Nolan, either by posting here or by contacting us directly. We take your suggestions and feedback very seriously and would welcome hearing from any of you.
