If this has been discussed before I apologize but I'd like to hear people's thoughts on this subject. I was a big fan of the early 90's TV show Northern Exposure. One of the main chracters was a Mercury astronaut (named Maurice Minifield in the show). In the series his history was discussed in detail. What real Mercury astronaut was this character based on? |

Not sure, but I THINK I remember the character referring to his walking on the moon. Of course, the only Mercury astronaut to do that was Alan Shephard... |

I was a pretty big fan of that show and while Minnifeld was a Mercury astronaut -- and an Air Force F-86 pilot in Korea -- he always talked about "going" to the Moon, not walking on it. I assumed, then and now, that he was a CMP.UPDATE: My bad. Minnifeld was a Marine. [This message has been edited by Rodina (edited August 18, 2003).] |

I had forgotten about his mentioning going to the moon. I always thought he was closest to Wally Schirra for some reason, except he didn't have Schirra's sense of humor. I guess he's kinda like Richard Gordon if he'd been a Mercury astronaut, or even Pete Conrad.... |

I always thought that it wasn't one particular astronaut, rather a combination of several. The actor also narrated the video version of Deke Slayton's book so I always associated him with Deke. |

I never try to shoehorn fictional astronauts in with reality. I just take 'em as an alternate reality.
