I was contacted by a film Director on behalf of a Producer, who wants to use the pictures and images of cosmonauts on my Website in his film. He asked for the origin of the pictures, and if they had been liberated from all rights. Also, if they can be used freely and who he needs to contact for permission if they aren't. This has caused me to wonder if when we put images on our sites, or sell and trade photos, are we infringing on rights?? When someone signs a photo for us, are they also giving away their right to that image?? Does NASA and Star City always retain rights to images and photos?? Any ideas |

NASA's copyright policy can be read here: http://grin.hq.nasa.gov/copyright.html With the Russians, its more difficult to discern, as there are various agencies involved, among them: http://www.rosaviakosmos.ru/ http://www.energia.ru/ It is my general understanding that once a photo has been autographed to you, a case could be made that you own the "rights" to that specific version of the photograph, i.e. someone cannot apply the copyright (or public domain) provisions of the parent space agency and apply it to your autographed photograph. |

Unless specified otherwise, I thought all rights to images belonged to the organsiation that asked for them to be taken in the first place.Regards, Rick. | |
