JUst received a photo of KSC Cape Canaveral with a Boeing 747 and Enterprise piggyback overflying the KSC and noticed a Russian BURAN shuttle on the ground near the Saturn V which is on display near the VAB ...
Is that BURAN shuttle still there ?

Can you forward that photo? Is it possible you are confusing Columbia on the piggyback and Enterprise parked near the VAB (it was there for quite some time before moving to DC).

You're correct Robert ... It is Columbia on 747 with BURAN underneath on the ground ...
It's an early 1980s photo I guess as the VAB still has the Bicentennial star painted on its side ... I believe that was later changed by the NASA logo ...

Does the below photo appear to be the same orbiter you are calling Buran? If so, its not -- its Enterprise:

Not at all ... THe photo I have shows BURAN more to the right from where Yours is taken ... it is parked on a concrete parking together with some cylindrical segments of what might be a rocket ...

I do not think a full scale Buran has ever been in the United States.

However, I am trying to work out the timeline when such an appearance was possible. Let's go by what we know:

1983 - The first full scale Buran mock-up was delivered to Baikonur in December.

1985 - Enterprise was moved from KSC to Washington, DC in November.

1988 - The first flight of the Buran was in November.

1996 - The Saturn V outside the VAB was moved to beside Banana Creek.

1998 - The bicentennial logo was replaced with the NASA logo on the side of the VAB.

So, if indeed the photograph shows a Buran at KSC beside a Saturn V and with the bicentennial logo on the VAB, then it had to be taken between 1988 and 1996.

One other interesting date to note:

1989 - On June 4, Buran was displayed at the Paris Air Show.

I would think the arrival of a Russian Space Shuttle at KSC would have grabbed headlines -- it did in Paris and again later in Australia in 2001, but a search of the web brings no press releases, no statements by NASA or the Russians.

I hate to ask the obvious -- but you have my interest really piqued -- what is leading you to believe the orbiter in the picture is a Buran?

And can you scan the photo and e-mail it to me so I can post it for others to look at?

I wonder if the photo was actually one of the US shuttles taken when it had the OMS pods removed for maintainance? I've seen photos of this before, but can't find one on the web at the moment. The US shuttle will look very similar to Buran when the pods are not installed: http://www.buran.ru/images/jpg/buran.jpg

This is not the Buran but the Enterprise. I believe the photo was taken around the launch of STS-51J, because I have a 51J launch photo taken from the same angle.

Robert,
Still waiting for Philip's scan?
I think he is fooling you guys.
Buran at KSC?! Gimme a break. No way...Don't you think it would have been big in the news when a big sovjet russian carrier plane with Buran lands at KSC.

All times are CT (US)
