Just a note of appreciation today for the crew of Apollo XI, the folks in Houston and everyone responsible for, 32 years ago, achieving the feat that removed the word impossible from the English language. Well done. On the 30th anniversary of the Apollo XI launch, I was down at Kitty Hawk. It was amazing to consider how far we had advanced in 66 years going from that first, brief powered flight to 240,000 miles through a vacuum. Sometimes awe is the proper response. |

Yep, amazing to think about.Something kind of sad to think about though.
Space travel and spacecraft advanced so much in the few years between Alan Shepard's flight and the moon landing. Less than 10 years!
...the space shuttle has been flying for 20 years without much advancemnt in that time. Sure, it has a new glass cockpit, lighter fuel tank, improved safety features and other things, but it is pretty much the same old "truck" it was 20 years ago.

Two things really fire me up. Politics and the "I" in the ISS. Since this is not a political chat room, I will bite my tongue. (Ouch!)Let me just say that it is easier to have a Moon Race, or "Mars Race," when you are racing somebody. Without the perceived, "Red Threat," of the Cold War, Americans, or Earthlings for that matter, care more about, "Reality TV," than reality. ------------------

I must admit that even though I was a big supporter of Pres. Bush during his stint as Texas Governor & during the presidential campaign, I now have to agree with Jacqueline. Robert you can say "I told you so" & I'll accept it in good grace  . To date Bush has actually hindered not helped the manned space program. On top of it he's for the rape of our natural wonders & resources.Live & learn. ------------------

I sure didn't vote for Dubya!The only rocket related stuff he supports is his "missile defence shield". What a waste... Anyway, back to other things. Happy 32nd anniversary of Apollo 11 landing!  Tom |

With respect to the lack of forward progress of the past 20 years, I can only pass along Alan Bean's comments on this point (which I found oddly comforting). In the history of man, 20 years is a very brief period of time. Whether the pilgrims landed in 1620 or 1650, this nation still would have occured. The period of time, though long to us, is relatively brief. Our destiny remains in the stars and whether we do it 5 years from now, or 50, we will get there.Let's hope it is sooner rather than later.
