I was just wondering. Do any bonifide astronauts look at this site? Are there any Mercury/Gemini/Apollo/Shuttle astronauts out there that occasionally pop in and out of colectSPACE, making a note of what we are discussing about, aruging about, and sometimes even agreeing about!!!!Wouldn't it be interesting to know? Does anyone agree? Jacqueline |

I'm sure Robert will chip in with the facts, but I believe he once said that some of them do visit the site.------------------ Happy trails, Wayne Edelman (you-are-go-for-tli) "Take sides! I can confirm, that yes, astronauts do read this site. I won't say much more, as I don't want to violate their privacy. |

Wouldn't it be nice if some of them would speak up and make their presence known. Ryan |

Perhaps if they realise that the majority of forum members are genuine collectors, and not dealers, they may be more inclined to sign some of the articles sent to them. this would mean that, for certain signatures,we would not have to go through a third party who is obviously profiting from such a deal. I do not object to making a gesture of thanks to the individual, ie a contribution to a charity etc, that is only fair. Any other thoughts?John |

I have had feedback from several of the pre-shuttle astronauts that they indeed monitor this site and the one devoted to astronaut autographs. From the interchanges on these sites, and watching the activity on ebay came most of the knowledge in the astronaut community of the commercialism within the space collecting community. Although I've never sold astronaut-signed things myself, I've had repeated statements from a number of astronauts that they've ccome to consider the collector fraternity a bunch of true dealers and a pack of leaches who support their hobby by selling signatures they obtained for nothing to finance things they HAVE to pay for. Can't say I'm in too much disagreement with them, I see postings over and over again from the same "collectors" referring us to their latest ebay offerings. I used to have the same experience at a stamp club I belonged to. The same couple of people would approach me at every meeting, buy up a few sets or First Day Covers of my latest issues, plus a few from back issues and pester me to sign every single stamp plus the covers (bear in mind I sold them for what they cost me, face value, and never made a cent on any sale). When I began to realize they had multiples of each item, signed, and I tried to put a stop to this obvious dealer practice...or require a small signing fee donation to the club for all the extras....they proceeded to bad mouth me to all and sundry. At the next stamp shows here and in Albany I found the material I'd signed at the club meetings on sale by two dealers at very handsome prices. When questioned (they didn't know who I was at that point) they readily stated they'd bought the material from a couple of people who, "had contacts with the designer". Yes, folks, the guys who supply the stuff you collect do indeed monitor certain sites on the internet, and do read what is said about them, and about how good/nasty they are and the tricks some employ to get that extra free signature. So, don't be surprised when some things you've posted on a site you thought was only read by your fellow comes back to haunt you. Doc Dr. William R. Hanson Lunar Artist-Apollo 16 |

Can it...somehow...happen for the veterans, retires, and new candidates have a once a month chat time with us? I think a chat room would be created for this.We will or some will behave as screaming nutty concert fans as they are (astronauts) our popular rock band. Can we have a chat time with any volunteer astronaut? Please...Please...Please |

I think that it is wonderful that present, and former astronauts check out our posts on this website. I am honored at the thought that maybe Wally Schirra, Frank Borman, or Dave Scott may have read some of our posts. I think that it is a shame that they have also seen us at our worst. But, even as wild and crazy as it can get in here, I doubt that we have really surprised them by our comments. These are pretty sharp guys, none of them "fell" into space, as far as I am concerned all of them more than earned their astronaut wings. So I am sure they know the score on collecting space. Some of us are nice, some are not so nice, and some of us can be down right mean. In other words a nice microcosom of the depravity of the human condition. Having written that, I know I have been known to hold the astronaughts to a higher standard when it comes to public relations, and the signing of autographs. That was before I waded into the shark pool here at Collectspace. Not everone here is a cut throat when it comes to getting a freebie autograph, then turning it around into a fast buck on e-bay. But enough of us are, that we have come very close to killing the goose that layed the golden egg. Folks, I have seen the enemy, and it is us. I am amazed that anyone is signing anything anymore. I want to personally apologise to any astronaut who reads this post, that may have been offended by any of my others posts on this site. It was never my intention to do so. But, as I have gotten older, I have become a little bolder in expressing my viewpoints. Sometimes I bark a little louder than I mean to. Time for a trip to the vet to get a distemper shot I guess. So, to those of you in the Astronaut, and Cosmonaut community, please grace us with your presance. We would love to chat with you about the fasinating world of space flight that you have explored for us all. Naturally, as your time permits.
