In going through photos from preparations for the flight of Mercury-Redstone 1 in 1960, I came across this photo, which is ID'd as 60-2202, dated Nov. 1, 1960. The official caption on the back of the print reads: NASA/MERCURY. Capsule #2 MR-1 Capsule being transported to pad #5. I can't help but notice the "Area 51" sign mounted on the small security building. Of course, all have heard of Area 51 in Nevada, but in all of the photos I've seen of Hangar S from the Mercury days, this is the first to carry such a sign. Does anyone know the background of this sign? MR-1 is the "flight" in which the Redstone launch vehicle rose four inches off of the pad, but then settled back down onto the pad. Then, the escape rocket took off and landed in a nearby field. |
