This article is from the September 26, 1968 issue of Spaceport News: While most of the personnel at KSC are geared to the upcoming Apollo 7 and 8 launches, the Launch Complex 39 Site Activation Office is working toward a November 1 readiness date for Pad B.Pad B, located about two miles north of Pad A, is the scheduled launch site for the second manned Saturn V in the February-March period of 1969. This flight will be the first carrying all three segments of the spacecraft - the command, service, and lunar modules. "Because of the similarity of Pad B to Pad A, and because of the progress make to date, we expect no significant delays in meeting Pad B's readiness date," said Lt. Col. D. R. Scheller, Chief of the LC-39 Site Activation Office. Apollo 9 at Pad 39B?Maybe the original plan was to alternate the pads with each launch: - Pad A: Apollo 8
- Pad B: Apollo 9
- Pad A: Apollo 10
- Pad B: Apollo 11
As we know, Apollo 9 was rolled out to Pad A. Perhaps the Pad B readiness date slipped. So maybe it was Apollo 10 that ended up going to Pad B (and Apollo 11 to Pad A) because Apollo 9 was supposed to go to Pad B, but didn't. |

Interesting that photo S69-27089 just adds to the confusion: caption is for Apollo 10 at Pad B, but photo shows Apollo 9 at Pad A. | |
