I've been less than perfectly clear on the process of getting the Apollo PLSS (Portable Life Support System) backpacks discarded and left behind on the lunar surface, and assume it must've gone something like this: - Astronauts ingress LM after final EVA, pressurize, have a rest period;
- Connect LM life support hoses to repress pressure suits before depressing the LM and kicking or shoving PLSS units and whatever else they wished to leave behind out the opened hatch;
- Close hatch, repress LM, and bon voyage
Also assume Lunar Module (LM)-Command and Service Module (CSM) rendezvous was performed with both LM cabin and pressure suits pressurized?How'd I do? Thanks. |

I'd say you've got it exactly right, Kurt.You probably know that they kept the OPS's (oxygen purge system), the top part of each backpack. If for some reason the LM couldn't get a "hard dock" with the CSM, the OPS is what would supply oxygen during a spacewalk from the LM to the CSM. The equipment jettison is on page 207 of the Apollo 11 Flight Plan. The equipment jettison actually happened two hours early on Apollo 11 (114:05), I assume because the crew managed to convince Mission Control to start the EVA early. |

The OPS and helmet LEVA from the commander (w/red stripes) were used by the CMPs on Apollos 15 through 17 for their EVAs to retrieve film from the service module SIM bays on the return to Earth. | |
