It was used to remove modules during EVA from an MMS type spacecraft.

Thanks Jim, appreciate the information, this being a mock-up, would you know where I could find a picture of the actual tool?

This mock-up was manufactured and two were flown on STS 41-C and used to repair the Solar Maximum mission.

Didn't they nickname it the Stinger?

You are probably mistaking this tool for the device that was used to capture SMM on 41C - which was called TPAD.
"Stinger" was used during STS-51A to berth Westar and Palapa.

NASA image S13-22-0902 shows James van Hoften using the flight version of this device on the Solar Maximum Satellite during Mission 41-C.
