I have been collecting for more years than I care to think and this flown American flag is new to me and in my opinion has a bad smell. This display looks right and is almost believable except instead of being awarded to a person or entity it is shown as a given to "Certificate of Authenticity" and that is entirely new to me. I have seen flown flags that do not list the mission. I have seen flown flags that where not presented to anyone but I have never seen a flown flag given to COA. Any other opinions on this one? |

Mr. Authenticity received at least two of these (another previously sold by same individual). |

Chuck, I have a few of COAs for pieces given to me by shuttle and ISS astronauts. They actually say Certificate of Authenticity on the sheet. I can provide you with at least one COA example that is hanging on my living room wall from Heidi Piper. |

When asked who it was made out to, the eBay seller replied "The Flags were given to First Responders shortly after September 11th 2001. Thanks"And when questioned further, they replied "Not sure what you mean? NASA couldn't put individual names on them so I guess they put Certificate of Authenticity to show it is from NASA." |

Overall, the format looks good to me, however, with so many first responder names from 9/11/01 attack, it would be highly unlikely that all of those names, individually, would be on each certificate.Like with Larry, Chuck, I've got a couple of similar certs like this with no flight indicated, name presented to, etc. But in my opinion, you are correct, in that you don't normally see a flag-cert. like this from NASA, but it's not completely uncommon. Perhaps a closer examination of this particular format would help in comparison to other known STS-108/Endeavour presented US flags.

Surely instead of the generic "United States Space Shuttle" they could have maintained enough records to stipulate a specific shuttle mission. I guess it depends on how many of these were handed out, but it does seem a little strange to me. |

The families who lost loved ones on 9/11/2001 were given this style of presentation, which specifically notes that their flags were flown on STS-108.While the presentation card and photos appear to be similar, the flag mounted on the STS-108 presentation has a red-stitched border, which can also been seen during STS-108 mission in this photo. |

Are these flags 4" x 6"? |

Yes, they are 4x6 inches. Looking at the certificate offered on eBay, it is dated October 2001. Dan Goldin announced the "Flags and Families" campaign on Oct. 11, 2001, but NASA's press release from that day stated the flags would be distributed later that year, after STS-108 launched and returned to Earth. So how likely would it be that the certificates would be dated October 2001? |

I wonder if this was a mockup or prototype of the actual flown flag presentation, rather than a flown flag. I could see the responsible department putting together a presentation of how it was going to look. |
