For the benefit of those in and around Houston and Johnson Space Center area, today (Aug. 17) began the estate sale for the late Don Peterson, STS-6 astronaut. The same continues at his home in El Lago, Texas over the weekend.I first heard about the sale this morning after receiving a heads-up by a friend and cS reader. By the time I made it over, most of the space memorabilia had already been scooped up by others, including two Manned Orbiting Laboratory models, Gemini and Apollo contractor models, and some signed pieces relating to Peterson's role as a support crew member on Apollo 16. I had hoped to get an EVA patch presentation that was both made out to and "presented by" Peterson (the latter along with Story Musgrave), but it had been sold. I was however, able to pick up a few items, including the STS-6 embroidered patch that Peterson was wearing when he launched on the maiden flight of the space shuttle Challenger. The patch is matted and framed as it was presented by NASA. Also, an uncut Beta cloth STS-6 patch and a small pewter figurine of the Extravehicular Mobility Unit (the figurine was a presentation by Hamilton Standard). I don't know what was remaining by the end of the day, but when I left there were still vintage STS-6 embroidered patches, some STS-6 NASA lithographs authentically signed by Peterson's crewmates (but not Peterson himself) and a large selection from his personal library of space books and NASA publications.

Wouldn't there have been two STS-6 patches worn by Peterson? One on his flight suit and the other on his life vest worn on top of his flight suit? |

The vests did not have a mission patch, only the NASA worm patch and name tag. |

Correct. STS-8 was the first flight which debuted the crew patch on the vest. |

See on the table there a lot of photos, also in WSS. Should they been signed? |

The lithos were not signed. One would guess they were Peterson's supply for when he received requests for his autograph. |

I checked out the sale and they were selling NASA numbered photos for $50 to 20 each. Is this the current price range? The $50 ones had purple mimeographed descriptions on the back. And I must admit I did not see what era they were from (Apollo, shuttle, etc.). |
