Mroczek Brothers Auctioneers (MBA) out of Renton, Washington, contacted cS to give our readers a heads-up about a Mercury Project Era Prototype Space Helmet they are auctioning on Thursday (April 7):
Mercury Project Era Prototype Space Helmet, circa 1960. This helmet comes from an owner in Ohio. The owner recalled his family getting the helmet in 1961 or 1962, the person who gave it to him was Paul Valentine who worked for the Vanadium company in Byesville, Ohio. Paul had no family and wanted current owner's family to have it.

This helmet has been stored in a home and forgot about until recently. Said to have been given to Mr. Valentine due to his assisting a friend of Astronaut John Glenn.

There are some Mercury astronaut signed items in the auction as well.

This helmet is actually an unfinished shell for the US Navy MK-IV high altitude helmet. The bumps on the left rear and right rear are for the pressure regulator and head suspension tensioning unit respectively. The Project Mercury helmet, while similar, was a different shape. No doubt it came out of the BF Goodrich factory, which also made the Mercury helmets, but it is not a Mercury helmet.

All times are CT (US)
