Not actually "smuggled." When I was doing some correspondence with Alan Bean here is his actual words on the subject:
We did not sneak the self timer on the mission. We had it officially documented all the way. It was at the bottom of the rock sample bag, covered in moondust, and we could not feel or find it with our gloves.

I recently received a kind message from a well known engineer from the team of the Apollo 12 camera and that it was brought to management's attention prior to final inspection that someone had placed their initials somewhere onto the camera.
Due to privacy issues, further research and a space article in the works these are the only details I can provide at this time. It is exciting to learn more space history directly from the people still around who made it possible.

My house was robbed recently so I decided I should consider finding a safer home for the Apollo 12 TV camera plaque through private sale or auction.
Interested in learning more about the auction houses and appraising this extremely rare item that may still have moon dust on it. The story has never been taken on by space historians or others.
