Some of you folks on here may be aware that I am working with the family of my late friend Mike Levine who was a space enthusiasts, collector, and someone who frequented this site often. This is not any easy chore, but I am sure Mike would enjoy knowing others can still hear about and see some of the many unique pieces that he possessed. He was always proud of his collection. Although I have an interest in "space" history I lack the knowledge that most of you have. That being said, Mike may have had more significant pieces, but it is my opinion the most important item I have uncovered so far is a legal document signed in person by six of the Mercury 7 astronauts. The one signature missing is that of John Glenn who signed his own contract. The contract is also signed by the wives of the six astronauts. I am sure you can conclude that the six astronauts who signed this document are Virgil Grissom, Walter Schirra, Alan Shepard, D.K. Slayton, Scott Carpenter, and Leroy Cooper. This is a four page legal document which they "...appoint Harry A. Batten to represent them in the sale of the rights they may have arising out of the projects." I do not even have the knowledge to ask a questions of this item, but I just feel the need to put it out here for discussion and interest. |

Mike had two of these astronaut-signed contracts. In 2011, he wrote about offering them for sale here.In addition to listing this particular Mercury astronaut contract on eBay, he also consigned it to RR Auction. |

Robert, thanks for updating this post. Although the loss of my friend is still fresh, I must say, by seeing Mike's postings on here I am pleasantly reminded of his wit, humor, and his interest in collecting history. As best I can tell there are no longer any listings (from Mike's estate) on RR Auctions. I will keep my eyes out for other similar documents. | |
