Can anyone please tell me how to authenticate my 1969 Apollo 11 photo autographed by Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins and Buzz Aldrin please? My grandfather was on the USS Hornet and was a surgical tech during the splash down. I have the newspaper article saying he was givin the autographed photo as a gift along with a gold piece of the shuttle, thank you.

If you can share a photo or scan of the signatures, the community here can help you. For instructions on how to post a photo, see here.

With regards to the gold piece, what you likely have is a piece of mylar Kapton, part of the exterior coating of the Apollo command module (capsule). It was not uncommon for those who worked with the spacecraft on the USS Hornet to have removed pieces as souvenirs.

To elaborate on what Mike wrote, which is correct, you may want to read this: Astronaut Autopens.

Thanks, that sucks. I remember how excited my grandfather was when he talked about receiving that photo on the USS Hornet. He would be turning in his grave right now to hear it was autopen... I do however have several other autographs I will share with you once I take pics of them, thank you again.

If the other signed photographs are not inscribed to your grandfather then they're most likely Autopens too. Even some inscribed portraits can actually have Autopenned signatures but in general having a personalization on there makes it far more likely to be hand signed.

In any case if you post pictures here you will know for sure.

Also, apart from signed items, if your grandfather has any other mementos of the Apollo 11 recovery it's probably worth checking here to see it they are rare.
