I have a book that was prepared internally at NASA for von Braun's 50th birthday.

It is at least 9x12x3 inches and over 850 pages in length. It is in outstanding condition. No wear, no stains (any toning or washout in the pictures due to small camera in available mixed light).

Inside on the left is a full page picture of von Braun, while on the right is the title page:

Back side of title page has this:

There is a preface by Stuhlinger, Ordway, McCall and Bucher, which ends on this page:

Then a Prologue by James Webb.

Next is a table of contents. Sections include:

  • Systems and Operations
  • Spacecraft Design and Engineering
  • Propulsion
  • Guidance and Control
  • Instrumentation and Tracking
  • Engineering and Components
  • Physics and Biology

On the inside of the cover is a blue "NASA Headquarters Routing Slip" designating the receiving party by name and title with the remark "The attached Special Publication is forwarded for your information" Has a code and name for originator and date 6-27-62

Any idea how I can get an idea of the value of this? Any thoughts greatly appreciated. — Steve

Steve, I have one of these fascinating publications as well. Mine came from one of the original von Braun rocketeers and if I recall, only a few hundred of them were printed.

If not autographed by anyone, but in overall good condition, it could possibly fetch a few hundred dollars, and perhaps more! By "more," it would be difficult to pinpoint "how much more," but possibly within a better auction setting, maybe even between $500 - $1,000 or so.

But it really all depends on a number of factors and marketplace conditions.

Indeed Ken, a great condition copy with the original letter inside has a value between US $750 to US $999.

Thanks much for the information!

Where are the places to market a book like this? Are there particular auctions, sellers forums, list serves for seekers/sellers?

Does anyone know anything about a hardcover version of this book by McGraw Hill? Is it anywhere near as rare as the softcover? Also, did it come with a dust jacket? I purchased one with no dj. To my knowledge, proceeds from the sale went to a charity chosen by Dr. Von Braun.

All times are CT (US)
