I would like to ask for opinions on the authenticity or otherwise of the signed photo. I believe it is a pretty good match to this example from "Sons of the Blue Planet" as sourced by the late Rex Hall.

I have one opinion suggesting that it is genuine (and that is from one of the very few people who has a genuine Dobrovolsky in their collection).

I know the general consensus is that there are no genuine examples to be had, but I would like to see what people think. I am told it was originally from the Energia museum.

First lets deal with the letter forms. There are some variations in form that bother me here. Look at the loop to the left of the D, the strokes crossing through the o, the presence of a connective form in the r (looks like a p for those who don't know Russian), and the final letter which seems forced in the picture. The bar over the top which runs paralell in the top example, in the photo is an arch.

Secondly, things don't just come from Energia. It's a Top Secret facility with cameras and armed guards. The Energia building is so secret that even photographing its entrance is forbidden.* If a cosmonaut can typically not gain access to the archives here, or even answer what spacecraft are hidden here**, who is the person back in chain of provenance that was so special to have access and more importantly take it out of the facility? Something as rare as this would not be given out as a souvenir, even to a loyal employee with some middle management rank.

In my opinion, I would investigate the provenance and I'm not confortable with the letter forms.

*My note here, yes, the museum hall is widely photographed under controlled conditions.

**OT, the Vostok-4 spacecraft and numerous Soyuz craft are unaccounted for. They are officially property of Energia.

If anyone is interested, I have a report from a handwriting expert / document examiner who states that it is probable that my Dobrovolsky and the example in Sons of the Blue Planet were written by the same person.

The report also states that there are obvious limitations due to a lack of genuine examples for examination/comparison and the fact that a handwritten signature is being compared with a printed example.

I am happy to forward a copy of the report if anyone is interested.

All times are CT (US)
