A good friend of mine from church was a sound engineer for CBS News for 30 years. One of my greatest joys is to hear him, now a spry 91, tell stories of his time on the job. When Walter Cronkite announced to the world that President Kennedy had died, it was my friend who put the sound on the air. He flew on Air Force One with four different presidents.

Today, I went over to his house for a visit. As I was leaving, he handed me a rubber banded packet of stuff. I didn't think a lot about it... until seeing what was in it. He'd given me a few of his press passes, newspaper clippings and a folder that read "Apollo Program Office Splashdown Party" held at the Shoreham Hotel in Washington D.C. on 9 September 1969 with an Apollo 11 logo on the front and a 20 July 1969/First Man on the Moon stamp cancellation on the back.

On the inside are the night's menu and list of people making remarks. In the folder are a full color publication called, "Log of Apollo 11" ...and an autographed photo of the Apollo 11 crew.

I'm 99.999 percent sure that the signatures are autopens. However, on the 0.001 chance that they're not, I would not feel comfortable accepting this gift and have expressed that to his daughter and son-in-law. Could a few of you pass your opinion? I would certainly appreciate it.

I agree - they are 100% autopens - but hey, it's the thought that counts!

All times are CT (US)
