Since I see them all the time. These so-called "Space Medal" covers were made by German stamp and coin dealer Goede in the 80s I believe. They only say that the medal "contains metal flown in spacecraft" but they don't say on which spacecraft! Obviously in the 80s the MR-4 capsule was sleeping on the bottom of the ocean. Also there's a "Giotto-Halley" cover in that series which again would be "tough" to get flown metal from the Giotto spacecraft. It is my personal opinion that none of these covers contain metal flown on the described flight or mission for obvious reasons. They may indeed include flown metal from a (to me unknown) spacecraft. Or metal used in supporting the launch of the spacecraft.I do have an Apollo 11 30th anniversary coins made out of the launch tower supporting Apollo launches (well, at least that's what it says - whether it's true...). |

Chris, I don't think there's any reason to enter doubt about NASA-issued coins. The Apollo 11 30th anniversary medals were issued by NASA's Spaceflight Awareness Office (previously the Manned Flight Awareness Office) and they do indeed include part of the Launch Umbilical Tower. Likewise, the other medals issued by NASA and referred to by collectors as Manned Flight Awareness medallions or coins, were minted from metal that was blended with smelted flown artifacts. |
