My step father got a framed 16x20 photo signed by all three crew members from an estate auction in Bismark, Missouri. The man had been dead for a while and we came across a few other astronaut collectables of his, but none like this photo.

Please let me know what you think about its auhentencity. Sincerly, Ron Isgrig

As I also e-mailed you this evening, the signatures on your piece are autopens — machine drawn — and further, given the style of the print, they are likely pre-printed (printed with the photo). As such, the value of the print is minimal (even if they were not pre-printed, the autopen signatures are not valuable).

I will give the same opinion that Robert has appearently already given you twice.

The signature are not hand signed. They were signed on the print by a machine. The machine either signed one print and that print was copied or the machine signed many copies. Either way this print does not have the value of a hand signed print. If it were hand signed then it would probably sell for 3,000$ to 5,00$.

I would guess the value of your print at less than 25$. I have one somewhat like it. It is a pre-printed or autopenned crew photo. I had it framed along with some medallions and a patch. It hangs above my computer and I enjoy it.

Yours is a nice print and I suggest you enjoy it. Sorry but the print has no or at the very most little value.

But autopens did not exist in 1969-70. Stamps did. But these are not stamps. Also, it had to be done before 70 because Buzz Aldrin stopped signing his full name in 70, as is on this photo. I'm not argueing, just stating fact. Because of the age of this photo it could not have been done during this autopen age.

Your understanding of the facts is wrong. NASA began using an autopen machine with the introduction of the Mercury astronauts in 1959. The autopen itself was patented in 1803.

Further — though unrelated to your print — Buzz Aldrin ceased signing as "Edwin" in the early 1980s, when he legally changed his name to "Buzz".

I totally agree with Robert and the others, and I also concur that they are standard autopen patterns. I began collecting astronaut signatures as far back as 1963, and I can confirm that more than half of those I received were definitely autopens. Our good friend and author Kris Stoever, who regularly posts on collectSPACE, is the daughter of a Mercury astronaut. Her father has confirmed through her that, unlike most of his colleagues, he never used an autopen in that era to fulfil autograph requests, although it was made available to him. So that's straight from one who was there. Sorry.

Robert knows what he is talking about. He is too modest to mention this but Robert is Buzz's agent.

Another thing that you should ponder. If these signatures were really real then you should have received dozens of e-mail offers for the print from the many people who read these posts on a daily basis. Have you received any offers for the print?

Hate to burst your bubble because I know what it is like to want an authentic crew signed Apollo 11 print. I don't have one either but these but are autopens.

This is actually a very common item with the signtures preprinted into the image. The signatures on the 'original' were also Autopens, so what you have is a preprint of an Autopen signature.

You see these all the time on eBay, generally at about $5-15 if in good condition.
