I yet to understand why sellers are asking such inflated prices for Harrison Schmitt signed items. Back in the day when we received autographs thru the mail Schmitt was one of the best signers and never refused a request as was the entire Apollo 17 crew. |

If it (split boulder) had been a philatelic item (just needed a stamp and a postmark) I'd have snapped it up at that price. |

I contacted Jack Schmitt directly about 12 years ago. He freely and happily responded by kindly signing a copy of his book, But a follow up request for an autograph was declined by an assistant with the comment..... "while he will gladly sign his book, he no longer signs autographs.)For the record, I offered to pay him a fee equal to that charged at the Novaspace Private Signing in 2005, but he could not be persuaded. I think he makes the occasional exception for charitable events, but I suspect his recent autograph policy is the cause of the hike in the price of his signature. It is my understanding that Novaspace have asked him a number of times for further private signings but he has declined each time.

The Jack Schmitt autographed "Split rock" litho that David is offering was mine and I got it in a trade and then later sold it on Novaspace's (no commission) Astro-auction.It appears that Dr. Schmitt completely stopped autographing in the early 2000's after giving collectors a few months to mail in material that he graciously signed. But that window of opportunity closed after a short while and, as David found out, Schmitt has provided no autographs for at least 20 years now. Those he signed "for the future" have mostly been stashed away in private collections (as mine have that I got during that window of opportunity), so the pool of high quality Schmitt autographed items are hard to find available, so they do have a fairly high cost. |
