STS-62A Draft Art Patch Set and Commemorative Certificate of Authenticity

This set of patches is inspired by the first space shuttle mission that was slated to launch from the Vandenberg Air Force Base.

On May 16, 1985, STS-62A commander Bob Crippen responded positively to my request to help design his crew's mission patch. I submitted four designs but the mission was canceled after the Challenger tragedy in 1986.

These patches are updated versions of that original art — supposing that I had received feedback from the crew. For example in my original drawings, I had the orbiter launching north instead of south. In these patches, the payload specialists names are also included.

These designs were created by Tim Gagnon of Titusville, FL and Jorge Cartes of Madrid, Spain.

Your price is $12.50 each for the 4.5 inch patch or $10 each of you order all four. Shipping via USPS Priority Mail — $10 domestic USA, $25 for International. Orders can be combined.

This set will be offered one time. No more than 250 will be made. Please print and send in this form along with your payment.

Or you can pay via PayPal and add 6% to your total to cover fees or choose the "Friends and Family" option to avoid fees. If you choose this option please include your mailing address and email me this completed form.

Commemorative COA

This beautiful certificate is offered separately to complement the set of STS-62A patches. It features the orbiter Discovery in launch configuration on the SLC-6 Pad at Vandenberg AFB in California. The portraits of the STS-62A crew are included, as is the original artwork submitted to Bob Crippen in 1985.

The text of Crippen's letter to Tim Gagnon and a brief description of each draft design complete the certificate. Only those who order the complete four patch set and this COA will have theirs signed and numbered by Tim Gagnon.

Your price is $15 for this COA or $10 if you combine this order with the set of four patches. Shipping via USPS Priority Mail — $10 domestic USA, $25 for International. Orders can be combined. This COA will be offered one time. No more than 250 will be made.

Please print and send in this form along with your payment. Or you can pay via PayPal and add 6% to your total to cover fees or choose the "Friends and Family" option to avoid fees. If you choose this option please include your mailing address and email me this completed form.

As I mentioned to Tim, when I had five minutes with Guy Gardner he didn't remember seeing those sketches (but it was 20+ years ago; Hilmers didn't remember he was assigned to a Centaur flight either!) Gardner says he *may* have patch sketches, but they could be in a garage somewhere. Considering how many times he's moved, I'm not holding out hope.

Nice work, Tim and Jorge! It probably would have been more work (and more money) but I would have the PSs as a separate tab, considering Odle was originally assigned to this flight, not Aldridge.

Any plans to present copies to the crew?

Maybe my memory plays tricks on me, but wasn't the flight called STS-1V instead of STS-V1?

I asked Tim this question, 'what size are the certificates, and are they a stiff card'?
The answer was 11" x 14", and is printed on a glossy white card stock.

Yes Erik, on one of the two inverted triangular 'Discovery Vandenberg Launch Site' patches it is STS-1V, (the other being SLC-6).

Also on the set of five upright triangular Eagle One patches it is again STS-1V on all five.

Erik, per his letter to me of May 1985, Crippen mentions that "we commonly use term V-1 when talking about that flight."

Hart, yes I do hope to present a set to each crew member, if and when they are at KSC, unless someone can email me their addresses.

Crippen's address is easy enough, as is Mullane's. I think Crippen might have hosted a 62A reunion a few years ago, too.

Question: When all said and done... did they ever pick one of the designs as a final?

They never got that far, which is surprising since 62A was manifested for launch as early as early/mid 1985 (62A, not 61B, was to have been Ross' first mission).

The last post-Challenger missions to have designs approved were 61E, 61F, and 61G - although payload patches exist for at least 61H.

I noticed the "Go for" patches have 1-V vice the V-1 again is there anything significant or what's the difference (if any)?

All times are CT (US)
