I checked a little and saw that the Mitchell seems pretty hard to find, but Farthest Reaches has an already signed litho for sale for only $60. I'm sure you are looking forward to the experience of getting autographs in person, but hey.

I was able to get a B/W version of Mitchell with the Lunar Lander in Titusville when I was there a few months back. Judging from the card stock and the apparent age it was original. Found it in a thrift store for two dollars.

In the Antique Mall (in the Searstown Mall, Titusville) I was able to purchase a few for almost nothing.

I've never been to an ASF show, but I would think there's a decent chance they'll be selling at least some of those photos at the show. It would be nice if they'd publish what photos they'll be selling ahead of time so everyone could plan better.

If you do get photos printed yourself, be sure you avoid photos produced by inkjet printers. The autograph won't stick to inkjet printed photos very well.

Archive.org has the McCandless. I didn't look around for the others, but that might be a decent place for you to start looking.

As NASA photos generally are not copyrighted, one can send them to a place like WalMart and get them printed. Just carry the NASA copyright notice with you because some people may balk at "professionally taken" photos being printed.

In my case, my local Walmart is not concerned with copyright issues. The associates are helpful. Not many people, I'm sure are trying to get astronaut autographs in my area (Northern NJ). It was an issue when I tried to get photos printed in Titusville, FL when I was there recently.

I have had success ATTM as well as the Astronaut Encounter at KSC.

May be a little late, but have you tried ApolloMissionPhotos.com?

My local WalMart knows me to the point they recognize me on sight. Another Walmart doesn't care about the photos. Still, I know the one time I don't bring the copyright notice is the one time there's a sub on and asks.

It won't be too late until I walk through the door at KSC. Thanks all for your input and replies.

I've had that fight before...

One idiot behind the counter actually had the gall to tell me that military photos were public domain but NASA photos weren't.

Another time, a different idiot acknowledged that they were public domain, but told me that the law still forbid printing them.

(Note: I refer to them as idiots, not because of their lack of knowledge on this topic, but because they speak with authority with that lack of knowledge.)

So, for those who you get someone like that second person, who doesn't actually understand what "public domain" means, having the NASA copyright info won't do you much good.

The fastest way to get out of there if you're stuck with one of these people is just to say "Give me the release" and fill out and sign their release form. It's utterly pointless and unnecessary, but it'll save you a lot of time.

I don't understand how they can possibly expect their employees to follow copyright law when they don't bother informing them about copyright law, but after dealing with it a few times, it finally made sense--the employees will just make crap up and talk about it like it's the truth.

I have had good luck obtaining hi-res downloads from the appropriate representatives at the Johnson and Kennedy Space Centers. They will probably take a few business days to reply as I am certain they are very busy, but in my experience they are very courteous, professional, and helpful.

Your mileage may vary, but the one time I had someone tell me they wanted a release, I said, "NASA photos generally are not copyrighted," and handed them the hard copy of the website info with the pertinent info circled, and they gave me the photos. It may be because I put the fear of God into people, or I look authoritative, but I've had this argument only once.

I've yet to have the argument over "professionally taken" photos because I don't think they know what it means. How can you prove it? I'm more of a reporter than a photographer, yet some of my photos have appeared in books, magazines, and as centerpiece photos in the newspaper - all taken for the most part with a point and shoot than a three or four-figure digital camera. Just because I'm shooting with a point and shoot means it's not professional looking? What do they expect, photos that are somewhat blurry taken three hundred feet away? If you know how to use an iPhone, you can get some professional-looking photos under ideal circumstances.

Those of you who are planning on getting photos printed at Walmart might want to reconsider. A few years ago, I got 2 photos printed up at Walmart to get signed by Alan Bean and Richard Gordon. The Gordon is still in good condition, but the Bean signature began to crack and peel in the 2 days it took me to get the photo from Spacefest to my home in Houston. I'm not sure why one worked and the other didn't, but rest assured, both photos were well taken care of during the trip home.

Hmm — I would assume the issue lies in the pen, not the photo, since that's the difference between the two (assuming both were printed at the same time).

I've never had an issue like that myself.

By any chance, was the signature signed in paint pen?

In checking, I've had photos printed at Walmart since May 2010 and never an issue. In fact, one of them I got printed at that time, of the STS-73 payload and mission specialists, I've been carrying around hoping to get it completed, taking it on various car rides and at least one plane ride to get it signed (so far by Coleman, Sacco and Kathy Thornton, and unsuccessfully by Holt - twice.) Still in good shape.

Were you able to get everything you needed? If you're still missing any, I have high resolution copies of all of these except the Edgar Mitchell photo.
