Farthest Reaches is pleased to officially announce that we will be carrying Selecting The Mercury Seven: The Search for America's First Astronauts written by our own, Colin Burgess. As always however, there's something special being offered to anyone purchasing a copy through Farthest Reaches.

In this case, it's a beautifully produced insert, hand signed by seven of the original surviving Mercury candidates. It took a monumental effort to have this insert hand signed by each, given they reside in points all over the United States and are up in years. That notwithstanding, the task has been completed and the inserts are more than impressive with graphics reminiscent of what was provided with our copies of Al Worden's, Falling To Earth.

This will without question be your only chance to obtain the signatures of these men who have made me pledge to protect their privacy by not divulging contact information. They are not interested in receiving mail, email or making public appearances for speaking or signing autographs. They were however gracious enough to agree to hand signed a maximum of 300 inserts with a promise that they would only be included with purchased copies of this book and not sold separately.

I am accepting orders at this time with full payment of $44.95 plus shipping due at time of order. They will begin shipping just after Nov. 2, 2011 following a visit by author Colin Burgess who will be hand signing each of our copies on it's title page.

That this book is only priced at suggested retail is amazing considering what was required to produce and obtain the signed inserts. Anyone interested in this special edition of Colin's book may email or call and I suggest you do so at your earilest convenience because when they're gone... they're gone.

For more information about this book, visit Farthest Reaches. Thanks to all for your ongoing support...

I have spoken to author Colin Burgess who asked me to remind everyone that he would be happy to provide personalizations upon request, for anyone purchasing a copy of his book through Farthest Reaches. An image of the insert itself can be seen at the top of this thread though Colin will be providing his signature on the title page.

Orders are coming in quickly and only 300 total copies are available so suggest if you're interested, that you contact me sooner rather than later. Thanks to you all...

I have to admit I'm just as excited and pumped as Steve after seeing the first of the fully-signed inserts. They are not only a gloriously-produced memento, but the signatures are all bold and beautifully hand scripted by the guys. As Steve mentioned, this was a mammoth undertaking, fraught with the possibilty of the cards being lost in the mail, a sudden illness, and a hundred and one other ways in which it could have gone wrong. However Steve persevered, and the result is this truly marvellous insert, which I can't wait to hold in my own hands.

Just to reiterate, there are only nine surviving, non-selected Mercury candidates (and two selected - Glenn and Carpenter) still with us. One of the surviving candidates chose not to sign for personal reasons, and the other was, much to his regret, physically unable to sign. That left us with seven candidates; quite ironically, 3 USAF, 3 USN and I USMC - exactly the same makeup as the Mercury Seven astronauts.

The accompanying book tells the stories of 32 remarkable men - the nation's best test pilots of the time - and it is a truly fascinating story of their lives and how they came to be involved in testing for the role of Mercury astronaut. Following the success of the signed Al Worden poem insert to go with his new book, Steve took the plunge and we set about designing a similarly attractive insert and having as many of the surviving, non-selected guys as possible to sign 300 of them for us. I must admit I didn't expect as many as seven to rally to the call, but they did, and it will become a true treasure to own, along with the book (if I may be so bold).

Steve tells me that orders are pouring in, so my only recommendation is to get in fast for your book and the bonus insert. I will sign all of the books when I'm in LA in just four weeks, immediately after which Steve will begin shipping them out. As the showman once said, when they're gone, they're gone forever.

Steve and Colin, my order is in, and has been for a few days. The insert looks great but most of all I look forward to reading your latest book.

Steve, I'll take it as read that you will e-mail order confirmation with the final total cost when you get a chance? Thanks.

Can you make any available at the AAMS? I'm heading over from Oz and would love to buy a copy signed with the insert.

Do what I have done and get a copy delivered to your hotel address in Florida. Steve is very understanding with regards to this.

I hate to put a damper on this, but unless you've specifically asked Steve to send you an insert copy without my signature in the book, it probably won't be there. I am not flying into Los Angeles until November 1st, where I'll be picked up by Steve and go straight to his office where I'll sign all 300 books. So the books will not begin to be mailed out until at least the 2nd, and as Steve's is a one-man operation it will take probably a couple of weeks before they have all been despatched. It is therefore highly unlikely that any orders with a hotel address coinciding with the AAMS will reach there.

I'd love to be able to transport copies over to Orlando with me, but airline weight restrictions would preclude this. However I'll speak to Steve and see how many such orders there are. If it's only six or less I may possibly be able to help. I'll keep you posted.

Colin, I wouldn't dream of asking you to carry a copy over to Orlando especially for me. Thank you for the very kind offer but I can easily wait, and save your back.

I am perfectly happy to wait until you sign the 300 copies at Farthest Reaches and then take delivery at a much later date. Not all 300 but just the one, mustn't be greedy.

Orders will be taken for this most interesting new book by Colin Burgess until my limited supply (with hand signed insert and Colin's signature ON the title page) are gone. Less than 300 copies are available when you factor in the presentation copies that are being given to each of the surviving Project Mercury candidates. Trust me folks, this one is a keeper.

As mentioned on the collectSPACE Autograph Shows forum, the grounding of the Qantas fleet has caused me to cancel my appearance at the AAMS in Florida in a few days. One of the reasons for my trip to the States was to sign all 300 copies of my new book for Steve Hankow at Farthest Reaches, who would then begin shipping them out along with that fabulous insert signed by seven of the surviving Mercury selection finalists.

Obviously, Steve cannot hold back shipment of these books until I finally get across to Los Angeles, which may be weeks or even months away, so in the last hour or two we have come up with an urgency-based interim solution. It may not be entirely satisfactory to all, but it's the best we can come up with so that things are not delayed any more.

I am going to purchase 300 gummed bookplates which I will sign and send straight over to Steve. The airline shutdown may cause these to arrive a few days later than normal, but that's up to the Post Office. Steve will then send out any books ordered through Farthest Reaches together with the fully-signed insert plus my signed bookplate. It will then be up to the recipient as to whether they will affix this to their copy or not (I know a lot of folks are not big fans of bookplates). However, once I can get back over to Los Angeles again (which may not be for some weeks or months now), Steve will let those on his pre-order list know and they will be able to send their books back to him for my signature and return to them. Of course books can be sent to me here in Sydney if pre-arranged beforehand with me through my e-mail address, but only if a return-stamped envelope can be provided, as air mail costs from here are quite prohibitive and I can't sustain that.

Fortunately I'm not an astronaut like Al Worden, so my signature on the title page doesn't command anywhere near as much attention, so hopefully you will find this stop-gap measure acceptable. Steve and I have worked long and hard over this book/insert project for some months now, and while we are extremely disappointed that my travel plans have had to be abandoned, we both want to try to do our very best for everyone who has ordered through Farthest Reaches and are now waiting on their shipment.

We will advise further news as we know it.

Hi Randy. Yes, I've just woken up to that news. However this dispute is far from over; the planes won't begin flying until tonight and then only on a limited number of services as the airline slowly comes back up to speed. And of course there is a massive backlog of passengers to clear worldwide. All way too late for me, I'm afraid. The unions and Qantas are still at each others' throat and the airline is only flying because they have been ordered to resume services, with a deadline of three weeks before any sort of resolution can be reached in the courts.

Though disappointing for us all that Colin has needed to postpone his trip to the States, orders will nevertheless be filled for his new book along with the very special insert. As Colin has mentioned, bookplates with HIS signature will be offered at this time.

When he is next able to travel this way, which he is committed to doing as soon as it is practical, Farthest Reaches will coordinate an author signing and our clients who would prefer Colin's actual signature in their book(s) will be invited to return them for that purpose. The only cost involved with be that of the shipping to and from your door. Otherwise, will be a courtesy signing to make up for the cancellation of his trip.

Remember, there are now LESS than 300 copies available for sale with the complimentary hand signed Project Mercury Candidate inserts with no plans to offer more. If interested in placing an order, I suggest you do so sooner, rather than later in order to reserve your copy. Thanks to all...

Another thought courtesy of a collectSPACE'er that I'd be willing to entertain as a convenience to anyone purchasing Colin's book. That is, I'd be willing to hold any paid copy upon request, until such time as Colin returns for his Farthest Reaches signing. This may not be for everyone but still, for those of you who aren't in a hurry and would rather have Colin's signature on the title page, would allow you to avoid sending your book back and forth when he visits for the "make up" signing.

For those of you willing to wait for me to personally sign your copies before they are shipped, I'm more than happy to add the inscription of your choice, so please pass these along to Steve and he'll keep them on file for my arrival. Still not sure when that might be at this stage.

I had a nice talk with Steve yesterday as I ordered my copy. Colin is a wonderful author, and I'm really looking forward to this book. I have chosen to wait for Colin's signing (as have apparently a lot of others), but I can't blame anybody for being anxious to get this book in their hands. As he has noted in this thread, Steve offers a variety of options in this regard. I can't imagine this offer not selling out, so I recommend to those on the fence to jump on this offering soon!

I'll now confirm that for everyone. I will be flying over from Sydney and meeting Steve in Los Angeles Monday and will start signing all of those books so he can finally begin making a delayed shipment to everyone. The sudden grounding of the Qantas fleet last week really threw the proverbial spanner in the works for me, as I lost my ride over to the States, where I was going to attend the AAMS at KSC. After clearing a couple of commitments this week I was able to find a few clear days next week to fly over to LA and back. My apologies to those who are waiting, but I think you'll be mighty impressed with those multi-signed inserts and hopefully with the book itself.

I couldn't be more pleased to see Colin be able to make it to the "Left Coast" for his signing this coming Monday. Books ARE still available with the complimentary insert (see top of this thread for image) but don't expect they'll remain so for long. Email or call if interested in placing an order and please keep in mind, that when they're gone, they're gone.

We were most fortunate and grateful to have the 7 Mercury Candidates hand sign these 300 inserts. They were somewhat reluctant but in the end, graciously consented to do so and yet, I'm sure will not be a "round two". The inserts themselves fit perfectly into the book and makes this a wonderful package, so give me a shout if interested in adding one to your bookshelf.

If anyone would like Colin to personalize their copy, now is the time to order because Monday is just around the corner. Thanks to all of you for your wonderful support. It's what's made Farthest Reaches THE place to go for quality autographs and space memorabilia...

Today's signing with Colin Burgess came off without a hitch. Following his long flight from Australia he was tired but cheerfully hand signed all 300 books. It was a most enjoyable day. Orders will begin to be packed and shipped at this time. Copies with their complimentary inserts are still available so if interested, please email or call using information found on FarthestReaches.com. Thanks to all for your continuing support...

I will accept "dedication" in signing all those books for Steve, as it took a lot of that this past week. Anyone who knows me well would understand that I simply could not let Steve and those who had placed pre-orders down - hence my very hurried return trip to the west coast (I'm back home again) which I paid for myself. So all the books are now signed by me on the title page - with my usual little salutation underneath - and Steve is already shipping them out in his "nuclear-proof" packaging.

Now that I've finally seen the insert in all its real glory I can truthfully say it is an absolutely wonderful and exciting thing, and one that any spaceflight enthusiast will simply have to have, I'm sure. As always, Steve has done an exemplary job in designing and putting this insert together and sending it around to seven elderly but willing former Mercury candidates for their signatures.

As Steve points out, there are only 300 inserts and 300 books available, and there will never be a second run of the inserts. So as the man says, when they're gone - they're gone.

Colin, it was most enjoyable and was as much fun as working as one could possibly have. I look forward to seeing you in May if its in the cards.

Beyond that, though I'm a bit biased, the book and insert make a most impressive package and am confident all who choose to avail themselves of this offer, will enjoy having this title on their bookshelf.

Books have begun to ship. I expect they will move along much faster than "Falling To Earth" now that I've got this mass mailing thing down to a science. Still, and being a bit hammered with email and and am in the midst of getting used to my new MacBook which I admit is slowing me down just a bit. The second group of 10 copies will ship tomorrow and more over the weekend. Copies are STILL available but wouldn't delay if interested.

After I’d signed all the books for Steve Hankow last Tuesday, a group of us met up at Kincaid’s at Redondo Beach for a celebratory lunch. In the photo below are Mercury astronaut finalist Chris Christian, his son Gary, yours truly, Michael Cassutt (foreword writer), Steve Hankow, and another Mercury finalist, Dale Cox. In the second image I am sharing centre stage with Chris Christian and Dale Cox.

It's Thanksgiving and Farthest Reaches is hard at work shipping orders for Colin's book. The feedback has been tremendous for both the book AND the complimentary insert. Still, there are copies remaining of the 300 available and I'm happy to continue accepting orders at $44.95 plus shipping.

I'll be available throughout the week and weekend so don't hesitate to call or email if interested.

In my opinion, copies of this book with the hand signed insert are destined to become a highly desired collectable as the signatures of the featured Mercury candidates are harder to come by then hen's teeth. Thanks to you all.

I still had my Qantas ticket that I was going to use on my way to Orlando for the AAMS, so I was able to change the date and just fy to LA and back home. I've known Steve for a long time and I know just how much he cares about doing the right thing by his Farthest Reaches clients - many of them collectSPACE devotees, so even though I only had a short time in which to make the trip and get back I decided I couldn't let him and everyone down by not signing those books. I'm glad it all worked out in the end, and it was worth it to see one of those fabulous signed inserts for the first time (and of course bring one home).

Noted author Michael Cassutt was kind enough to hand sign his "Forward" in a very small number of this most interesting book.

The next two copies ordered will come with that extra signature as well as the insert and Colin's signature on the title page. It just doesn't get any better. All for cover price...

Mine was crammed into my post office box Friday morning, and miraculously escaped damage. The insert is beyond awesome, and I'm glad I waited to have Colin sign the book. Thanks to all of you who made this happen - it's a keeper, made all the better by involving a book that's a great contribution to spaceflight history.
