This is a piece of ablative heat shield from an Apollo Command Module. I was very young when my dad gave me this -- my memory was that this is from a flown mission. I have no documentation of this and have been unable to obtain it. In total fairness I recently sent a picture of this item to a NASA employee and his best guess was that it was an authentic heat shield but probably from a test.
