After an exhaustive series of tests (or at least an exchange of emails), candidates for the next round of the European Grab Bag have been whittled-down to the following participants:

Jacques van Oene
Kirsten
spaced out
eurospace
Harald Kreanzel
Frederic Janik
ApolloAlex
KenDavis
Steve Procter
Cameron Stark
machbusterman

Others who wish to join the EGB II are welcome to join the so-called "Next 11". Just post here or send an e-mail to myself or Jacques.

Background Notes:

The original EGB travelled approximately 6100 miles (9800 km), visiting 6 countries en route.

The new improved EGB II will be following an optimised flight path designed to minimise international deliveries.

UPDATE: EGBII current location shown below:

This is the list of participants in the EGBII in the optimum order.

Jacques van Oene, Netherlands
Kirsten, Netherlands
Spaced out, France
KenDavis, England
ApolloAlex, England
spaceman, England
Steve Procter, England
machbusterman, Scotland
Cameron Stark, Scotland
Frederic Janik, Finland
eurospace, Germany
Harald Kraenzel, Germany

This minimises the physical distances between each person and the number of international deliveries needed. Overall distance is about 5000km.

Thanks to Chris!

Kirsten, you can be at the end of the chain if you'd prefer. I have lots of bits and pieces to put in and don't expect to be taking a lot out so I'm happy to be first in the chain after Jacques.

If you agree then Jacques can send it to me first and I'll send it on to the UK...

The EGB-2 was launched today at 13:15 CET. Lift-Off went without any problem, Flight control team here in Mission Control Apeldoorn say's that the EGB-2 should reach it first destination (Paris, France) within a week....

The next Status Report on the EGB-2 flight comes after landing in France.

Will it be performing a slinghot manoeuvre around the Paris ting road to put it on course for the UK?

If the EGBII has to go around the Paris ring road (peripherique) it won't reach the UK before Christmas.

Can I suggest that those of you on the flightpath try to pass on your postal address now to the person that's going to be sending the bag to you?

It's never too late to join! I think you can go in straight after Ken, and just before ApolloAlex.

As it happens, the EGBII landed this morning in Paris after a journey of approximately 455km. I haven't had time to begin the payload analysis and reloading phase yet. At first glance the capsule appears to have survived the reentry phase, and the loving care of the Dutch and French postal systems, intact. I expect to have it turned around ready to launch on Monday for its parabolic flight across the Channel to Old Blighty.

The EGBII is off on its way to Old Blighty.

The payload has been upgraded with the following:

A couple of original Gemini press release photos, some vintage NASA lithos (Apollo era), NASA issue shuttle glossies, some high quality modern prints of Apollo images, a few Apollo 17 covers, lots of patches (including a couple of Lion Brothers Apollo patches with minor flaws), some decals, and a nice vintage booklet from the Smithsonian.

A word of advice for those on the flightpath:

Do try to put in stuff as good as you take out, and remember that vintage stuff from the Mercury-Gemini-Apollo era is much more valued by most collectors than stuff from later eras.

The grab bag has landed in the UK.

I've taken out about 12 or so Shuttle crew lithos and about half a dozen other prints. I've put in a cover signed by Frank Borman and another by Leonov. If also added a few other signed shuttle lithos; Eileen Collins, Rex Walheim & Steve Maclean and a couple of other unsigned astronaut lithos.

Chris has suggested a slight course correction so the Grab bag is going on to David next and to Apollo Alex after that.

List as far as I am aware is as follows:

David Worrow, England
ApolloAlex, England
spaceman, England
Steve Procter, England
machbusterman, Scotland
Cameron Stark, Scotland
poofacio (David) England
Frederic Janik, Finland
eurospace, Germany
Harald Kraenzel, Germany
Kirsten, Netherlands
Jacques van Oene, Netherlands

Grab bag will be departing shortly once it has been refuelled

EGB2 has jettisoned 6 patches, an 11 dollar bill, a cover, and 11 photos and lithos.
It has been successfully docked with Signed Photos ; Bob Crippen, Bill Anders, Richard Gordon, Charlie Duke, Helen Sharman, Vance Brand, Harrison Schmitt,
Skylab 4 crew, Apollo 13 (just Ken Mattingley), Apollo 8 Lovell, Borman, Anders ( I think Anders is an autopen), Apollo 8 recovery cover, Lovell, Borman + others
STS 1 postcard, Young and Crippen, Cover, Jim Irwin, Skylab 4 cover Jerry Carr
Cover, Owen Garriot, Apollo 15 cover Full crew, + some other space debris!

It is in orbit around Somerset awaiting co-ordinates for a T somewhere I burn.

David (Poofacio), you ask in a previous post for my email address, well you can usually find it on one of the icons that appear by the date on each post, but no matter here it is:

alextracyward@tiscali.co.uk

And I look forward to receiving the EGB it sounds like it has some real good items, here's to a good splashdown!

Wow indeed! Looks like the EGBII has been seriously upgraded by David.

Remember folks - try to give as good as you get. Don't take out a Bill Anders signed photo and replace it with a signed inkjet print of unflown ESA astronaut hopeful Ebeneezer Humperdink III...

...and the clock is running, as of 10.20 a.m. this morning the EGB is taking a sub-orbital jump to Spaceman (Nick), so it should be with him in a matter of days.

And added were;
Signed items,
Rusty Schweickart (dedicated),
Two Mike Coats (one undedicated and one dedicated with letter)
Duane Carey (dedicated with letter)
Paul Lockhart (dedicated with letter)
Rick Searfoss
Robert Seamans signed STS-76 silk cachet
Don Peterson signed EVA postcard
Around half a dozen unsigned NASA shuttle crew photos
A dozen patches including Mercury, Apollo and Shuttle and misc
And other bits and pieces involving a couple of misc Apollo FDC, stickers and a shuttle tie pin and other goodies.

I do hope somebody finds a good home for my stuff, thanks.

I've been working away but the family were in to receive the parcel (and what a parcel) from Alex. The stuff in here is a collection in itself.

I have removed: 2 Lithos, 1 autographed postcard,5 patches and 5 postcards. I will be replacing with more items over the weekend and posting off to Steve Procter first thing Monday.

Had a chance over the Christmas break to trawl through the EGB contents. Removed a couple of covers and lithos. Added - Some signed Shuttle astro lithos, some signed 3x5 index cards including Jim McDivitt and Owen Garriott as well as 8 or so Shuttle astros. Some patches, photos and a signed photo of Mike Fincke in a Sokol suit.

On it's way to Derek after the New Year Holiday.

EGB made a safe re-entry into the Dunfermline atmosphere today.

I've not had a chance to have a good look at all the items yet but will do during the course of the week.

It should be on its way to Cameron Stark either next Saturday or the Saturday after... depending on when I can negotiate a day off work!!

I'm not sure what I'll be putting in it yet but one item I do know will be an uninscribed Buzz Aldrin 8x6 photograph. I'll give a fuller report as and when I am finished with the box.

I have plundered the box and now everything fits into an A5 sized envelope.... JUST KIDDING folks!!!!

I removed an Eileen Collins signed OSS litho and a 5x4 signed pic of Bill Anders. I have added an 8x6 signed pic of Buzz Aldrin, Gordon Fullerton signed STS-3 cover, a couple of shuttle astronaut signed lithos, a Ron Evans signed litho (possibly an autopen), Apollo 10,12,14 15 and STS-41G covers plus WSS glossy of Karol Bobko and a Gene Cernan "John Wayne" lunar EVA glossy.

The box will roll-out for launch next Saturday to Cameron Stark in Inverness.

Box safely received - thanks Derek! I've e-mailed Frederic asking for a postal address, and I'll send it on once I've had a browse through it. Frederic, can you get in touch with me, please?

I've taken out three signed photos, two signed covers, three signed cards and some patches.

I've added signed photos from Joe Kerwin, Richard Gordon and the Space Ship One pilots. I've also put in six Mercury covers, signed covers from Al Worden and Charlie Duke, a signed Bill Pogue card set and half a dozen patches.

I'll get the box off to Frederic by the start of next week.
